I think baby group are taking the piss out of me

I attend a free baby singing group at the library every week.

I am by no means fluent but as my eldest is non-verbal I can do a a decent amount of basic signing, including nursery rhymes.

So naturally I sign to my youngest too.

The other mums obviously notice and the animals at Old McDonalds farm have been getting ever more exotic - last week I had a bloody Llama! (After Hippo, crocodile and elephant failed to stump me 😂)

And the leader has started introducing more rarely used/obscure songs.

They enjoy seeing my WTF face, don't they? 😂

Maybe they just recognise a mum who knows how to sign and want to keep it enjoyable for you. Or maybe it's not about you at all and they vary the content every week to keep the class from becoming too boring. This post is such a not so subtle brag by you that you are the mum in a baby group who already knows how to sign. Jesus wept. They are probably taking the piss out of you because you are that mum, rather than because you know a few random animals in baby sign language.

Devilsmommy · 16/06/2024 08:55

As a child of deaf parents that really fucks me off. Who the fuck gets enjoyment out of trying to stump someone signing to a non verbal child?😠 I'd have been telling them to stop the bullshit though I completely understand why that would be hard for other people

I don’t think it’s the non verbal child at the group though.

Even still, why be a dick by trying to stump her anyway?

Baconking · 16/06/2024 09:03

I think OP was being a bit more lighthearted than the first couple of responses suggest. Note the laughing faces...

Yes OP, you need to get practicing on all obscure animals 😄

greencrab · 16/06/2024 09:05

What noise did the llama make here there and everywhere? Or the hippo?

To be fair lots of farms seem to have llamas now but others need to be reserved for "walking through the jungle" song!

To the poster mentioning non verbal child is not there.... They still need to learn the signs so as to communicate with their sibling.

And I don't think it's boasting to mention you learnt some signs to communicate with your child with SEND for flips sake

PuttingDownRoots · 16/06/2024 09:05

Maybe they are trying to learn from you?

But Old Mcdonald having a llama and a hippo made me giggle.

Although we do have a field of llamas or alpacas on a nearby farm...

Roseyjane · 16/06/2024 09:07

Are you sure it’s aimed at you?

Smartiepants79 · 16/06/2024 09:07

I’m thinking the op is joking? Being light hearted.
I wouldn’t assume that a group of essentially strangers were being so mean spirited to trying to ‘stump’ anyone.
There are many reasons why they might change up the songs.
Maybe they enjoy learning things from the op. I know I would.

AnCùDubh · 16/06/2024 09:07

Yes I'm definitely being lighthearted.
They didn't break me at hippo, crocodile or elephant but Llama had my first wtf face 😂

I'm also not sure that a skill I have as a result of accommodations for my disabled child counts as a "humble brag" 🙄

Baby groups are so cliquey and snobby! I have literally never managed to go to one more than once (ie I've tried different ones and never gone back).

Sorry to stereotype, I think the majority of mums who go to these things (not op) are the insecure and therefore compare-y kind of mums. At least that's the vibe I always get.

My friend is CODA and i occasionally ask her for ones that really stump me - but even "Mermaid" had her scratching her head (wasn't Old McDonald this time)

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 16/06/2024 09:12

They’re not trying to catch you out (which I think you know 😊) - the point is to introduce wider language and wider context. It just so happens that that stumps your signing!

Procrastinates · 16/06/2024 09:13

I'm just here to find out what fucking noises the llama and hippo were making. 🤣

The group sounds bonkers.

🤣 the problem is sign language has changed so much so the bsl I learned as a child would look different to what is done today. Even though I see what the new sign is I still revert back to the old one because I think it's almost like muscle memory and I just love signing the way I always have😅

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/06/2024 09:21

I once took baby Gdd to a singalong group, and nearly got myself thrown out for un-PC-ness. 😂
I didn’t know some of the songs, so when they started Miss Polly Had A Dolly I thought, Oh, good, I know this one! - and sang out lustily - without realising that the Doctor now came with HER bag and HER hat! 😱
Oh, the shame!

Janek · 16/06/2024 09:23

@Devilsmommy this is the exact equivalent of my mum's 80-year-old German friend, who moved to England when she was about 18. The German she speaks can be quite old fashioned. Of course it is, the language has moved on since then, just she wasn't there to pick it up! There's nothing wrong with the way you do it!

Exactly right! As long as my mom and dad understand me it's all good 😊 though when I've been out and spoken with deaf people they've managed to understand so it can't be too bad😂

NuffSaidSam · 16/06/2024 09:26

I used to go to one in a church where he had to sing 'Old Noah had a boat' instead of Old MacDonald had a farm.

I have to fight the urge to sing the Blackadder version of Row your Boat 😂

That would annoy me more not because it's biblical but simply because old Noah doesn't scan properly so the song doesn't work...

I work in a preschool and many times have nearly sang the other version of Jack and Jill (Jill forgot to take the pill and now they have a daughter). And I hate to admit it but the other awful version of eeny meeny miney mo was around in my youth and I am terrified of one day letting something slip so I never ever sing it.

Ms Pollys Dr is still male in our room but there are male and female doctors scolding those monkeys who jump on the bed.
