I went to Waitrose and now I feel like a frump

Everyone, I'm not exaggerating, every bloody person in there was slim. They just swanned around, speaking well, interacting lovingly with their offspring. It was like how things should be.
As you can probably tell, I don't go there very often. I'm a Tesco and Lidl person normally.
Forget social media. It's real life that's made me realise how overweight and grumpy I am Sad

I’m size 22 and shop in Waitrose. They’ve never turned my money away!

AstonMartha · 16/06/2024 10:18

BTW the people you mention are far too busy helicopter parenting with loud voices to notice anyone but themselves.

What a bizarre assumption @hastalav! How do you know this?

I've seen it, not just in Waitrose either! Reminds me of Catherine Tate and her gooseberry and cinnamon yogurt sketch.

SoupChicken · 16/06/2024 12:13

I mean yeah, in general you do get a better class of shopper in Waitrose than Lidl 🤷‍♀️but that’s because they build them in more affluent areas. I’m sure if you went to Harrods Food Hall they’d make the Waitrose shoppers look like Wayne & Waynetta Slob.

captainsudoku · 16/06/2024 12:37

My local Waitrose is all Lagenlook and well off students. Everyone is too busy jostling around the aisles to take any notice of how anyone else looks!

TeachesOfPeaches · 16/06/2024 12:43

If you want to feel like a supermodel go to Iceland

I shop at Waitrose and I’m overweight. I promise you, I’m not looking lovingly at my offspring either. I have two with adhd and autism and am far more likely to be saying (in a sharp tone) “for gods sake don’t sit on the bananas”. Or “this is NOT a playground “. “For the love of all that is holy is you mention poo one more time I’m putting back ALL the ice cream”

I’ve holidayed a couple of times in posh “family” hotels and the families are (perfomatively) practicing numbers in French with they’re preschoolers at breakfast or completely unable to control their offspring. All in head to toe Boden

ALongHardWinter · 16/06/2024 12:47

This is why I won't shop in Waitrose. 😂

I don’t get the obsession with different stores in the UK?

You can go where you like. I go absolutely everywhere. I don’t feel there’s any problem waltzing from Aldi to Waitrose?

No one else is thinking about how you don’t fit in at Waitrose? It’s a supermarket, not a members club!

JustPleachy · 16/06/2024 12:52

Don’t let appearances get you down. I rather like that the wine isle of my local, very run down Tesco is frequented by a gentleman whom I happen to know owns a relatively large percentage of the U.K. but turns up in his disheveled tweeds and muddy wellies bellowing across the store to his wife about what wine is on special offer this week.

beryldaperil · 16/06/2024 14:04

I know what you mean @OP. The clientele is somewhat different in Waitrose, but I think that is part of their purchase-planning locations. They don't intentionally build on the lower socioeconomic areas where typically larger families with lower incomes are located, and sadly yes where limited food options are the norm.

I stick out for other reasons, and I only go in to get a very few preferred items: night cream, soap, quiche etc and their yellow label items.

Lots of the demographic from one of my most accessible Waitroses are:
Tall
In riding gear,
In sporty gear
Have healthy natural blond straight hair

I sometimes nip to waitrose for milk and bread its near the bus stop anyway it's usually older people/ retirees in country casuals jackets and hats on or cyclists who are obviously slim and in their bike gear, I'm pretty frumpy anyway so I own it 😀

I know what you mean OP. But it’s not so much the customers who are different (I sometimes go there and I’m not like the ones you describe) , I think it’s mainly the staff, and the general vibe. In my local Waitrose the staff are all so polite and helpful. And often posh. I remember once hearing 2 young lads who were stacking shelves, discussing the delicious focaccia bread sandwiches they’d had for lunch , with some sort of amazing salad!

The staff at the tills are just so nice, and there’s a really calm feeling about the whole shop. Unlike Morrisons, where I usually go, which is like a noisy market in comparison!

MeinKraft · 16/06/2024 15:43

Come to Asda. Your people are here Grin

PickAChew · 16/06/2024 16:02

I do like a smaller, calmer supermarket. I usually send DH to the big ones for the stuff I can't get in markses or my online Waitrose shop (where I live evidently isn't posh enough for one of its own).

I have been known to shop in the Waitrose that usd to be in Newcastle City centre and the nearby poundland on the same day.

PragmaticDramatic · 16/06/2024 18:19

I was in the Little Waitrose near an area popular with posh students and felt out of place with the students shopping there. When I was a student it was the basic ranges for me.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/06/2024 18:21

If they shop regularly in Waitrose, they can’t afford to buy much food 😁

beryldaperil · 16/06/2024 18:22

Asda makes me feel bewildered @MeinKraft , the people aren't putting on aires and graces though, it must be said

I usually shop in Waitrose but when visiting our in-laws we go to Asda and our experience is the staff in Asda are much more helpful. (We don’t have a local Asda) At times I’ve been shocked by the cheekiness of Waitrose staff - never seen staff behave like it elsewhere thankfully! I really should stop shopping in Waitrose but it’s too convenient.
