I went to Waitrose and now I feel like a frump

Everyone, I'm not exaggerating, every bloody person in there was slim. They just swanned around, speaking well, interacting lovingly with their offspring. It was like how things should be.
As you can probably tell, I don't go there very often. I'm a Tesco and Lidl person normally.
Forget social media. It's real life that's made me realise how overweight and grumpy I am Sad

OP I used to feel like that at every school event in DSs primary school. At one stage I lost a lot of weight and realised at the next event that I was still probably the biggest person there. I remember ranting to dh 'This is ridiculous! There is supposed to be an obesity crisis!'

This made me laugh!

OP somehow your post has made me feel bad about myself as I don’t think I’d fit in either! I’m slim but look poor and my children leave me stressed and frantic in public. Wish I could be beautifully polished and swishy. Is that money removing their stress?

TomWambsgansSwans · 15/06/2024 20:48

@Lavenderandbrown ooh what are the hashtags for the Instagram movement?

TerrorOwls · 15/06/2024 20:49

@DazedNotConfused1 sorry! I don't want anyone to feel bad. Well, more money would definitely alleviate some of my stress. More holidays, a cleaner, more social events. Sigh.

I’m fat and shop in Waitrose, I’m not alone either! Weird rose-tinted goggles…

itsmabeline · 15/06/2024 21:44

I like looking around and seeing people with a healthy glow. Oh days I'm feeling too lazy to do anything it's good motivation that trying to live the good life will require me to get off my bottom and do some good work 😅

I usually feel at peace with my kids acting up and then being told off in public though, whether it looks loving or not! What else can I do? They need to know they can't embarrass me into not telling them off! Otherwise they win 😂😂🤣

BeaFuddled · 15/06/2024 21:52

I was in Waitrose earlier in a pair of old joggers, no make up, with unbrushed hair.

Why hadn't you brushed your hair?

I literally roll in to Waitrose in my PJs and greasy hair on days when I feel particularly unbothered

Why?

idril · 15/06/2024 22:04

I go to all the major supermarkets and could not tell you what people wear in any of them. I mean who cares? Not me. I sometimes go with sweaty hair, no make up and running clotbes and look a right state. Other times I go after I've showered, put my make up on and put some decent clothes on. Makes no difference to who I am. Maybe you just happened to go at a time when people tend to look their best.

Fizbosshoes · 15/06/2024 22:12

Dh sometimes goes in waitrose, he is not slim and he often ambles around in there in joggers after going to a sports club. He is usually buying wine, which is mainly why he is not slim.
I don't go a) because its too expensive and b) because DH takes an absolute age to choose something ....and then complains it was expensive! 🤣🤣

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/06/2024 22:20

What is this Waitrose with mythical slim people? Our local one has extra security on the door to stop people knocking alcohol. It's just a supermarket.

YellowHairband · 15/06/2024 22:20

Some people care. I used to work in Waitrose many years ago and a woman gave me a nasty dressing down because she thought I thought she wasn't good enough for Waitrose.

I was 16, I literally couldn't have given less of a shit about judging who was and wasn't "Waitrose standard". But I asked her if she had a John Lewis card (because the Waitrose magazine she was buying would be free if she did - I was required to ask customers). She thought that what I was implying was "does someone like you really have a John Lewis card".

It was only when she had a go at me I even noticed she was dressed pretty scruffily. But she obviously had a massive chip on her shoulder about it to take the question as a personal insult.

hattie43 · 15/06/2024 22:21

I always shop in Waitrose because I like the calm . No screaming kids . As for slim I've never noticed and not really looked but I would say my local is definitely an older middle class clientele.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 15/06/2024 22:25

Clearly it was neither of the 2 Waitrose branches near me OP.

TattieBap · 15/06/2024 22:26

I'm fat and have autism and love a good Waitrose jolly if that helps 😂

Loubelle70 · 15/06/2024 22:26

I like waitrose, it is a chilled shop. Customers dont seem so angry..i agree. I use the waitrose store few times week after work and people who have obviously finished work dont appear to be rushed or rude... tesco or asda... people can be rude and me me first. I get what you mean OP. However, you need to build up your confidence...it really is just that...no matter how you look... confidence is key

Photoontheshelf · 15/06/2024 22:38

The Waitrose close to me is small and has angry staff who hate customers- not surprising because they are filling shelves while customers are attempting to shop - it's like Christmas hell every day. I'd love a peaceful Waitrose but unless I get there early, it's awful.

Soonenough · 15/06/2024 22:47

It's a grocery shop. Hmm

Soonenough · 15/06/2024 22:47

I’m pretty sure OP’s post isn’t just about Waitrose.

It’s about suddenly noticing that you are not as slim/fashionable/chic/polished/serene as the people around you. And feeling frumpy as a result.

It just happened to be Waitrose.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 15/06/2024 23:00

BTW the people you mention are far too busy helicopter parenting with loud voices to notice anyone but themselves.

The OP said they were interacting lovingly, not loudly helicopter parenting. I doubt she'd have felt envious if they'd been acting like loud, show-offy twats.

Screamingabdabz · 15/06/2024 23:02

Me and my DH are from the rough side of the tracks but happened upon a Waitrose once. He literally shouted ‘WTF’ out so loud when he saw the cost of a Heinz Big Soup that the whole shop went quiet like there was a security breach. He then went around the aisles pointing at all the ‘piss taking’ outrageous prices compared to B&M or One Stop.

The moral of the story op is that they might be slim, and have a great relationship with their kids but based on those prices, they clearly have more money than sense. And that’s got to be comfort eh?

mondaytosunday · 15/06/2024 23:06

@hastalav really? People can't be a healthy weight and talk nicely to their kids without being accused of 'helicopter' parenting? And yes there are things there you can't buy at other stores, as there are things at Lidl you can't buy at Waitrose. And Tesco you can't buy at either other store.
My Waitrose is not nearly as rammed as the Lidl or Tesco (it's also half the size). I don't see people doing massive shops there oddly enough, nor bringing the whole family along (Mum, Dad, kids). I like it as it does have some foods I can't get at other places. It's closer too. I get home delivery from Tesco, but go to Waitrose for the odd top up and particular ingredient. I dress like I always do, but I do not dress in joggers or go out without brushing my hair, ever (though I did walk the dogs at 11pm in pjs with jacket on top the other night).

The lighting in Waitrose is significantly more flattering than the lighting in Aldi, which may have had some impact

This made me laugh 😆

Houseofdragonsisback · 15/06/2024 23:06

I’ve shopped in loads of Waitroses in SW London, I tend to feel young as the average age skews higher!

Kitjenkinl · 15/06/2024 23:08

What a load of villi js

TubeScreamer · 15/06/2024 23:14

About 90% of the customers in my local store are 80 plus couples who shuffle around looking confused by the whole shopping experience, particularly the need to pay at the end.

Renamed · 15/06/2024 23:22

Gosh my only supermarket altercation has been in my local Waitrose when a woman tried to step in front of me in the queue because “she would have been in that place if she hadn’t gone back to the cheese section”.
