I went to Waitrose and now I feel like a frump

Everyone, I'm not exaggerating, every bloody person in there was slim. They just swanned around, speaking well, interacting lovingly with their offspring. It was like how things should be.
As you can probably tell, I don't go there very often. I'm a Tesco and Lidl person normally.
Forget social media. It's real life that's made me realise how overweight and grumpy I am Sad

I went to my local waitrose when it first opened, just to see what all the hype was. 15 minute bus ride later, I wandered around, discovered it was no better or worse than my local sainsburys (5 minute walk) and came out with an electronic patience game, just so I could say I'd bought something. Not been back since.
If they were closer and were easier to traverse than sainsburys or lidl, I'd probably shop there. I couldn't give a flying fuck what other people think of me or how I look.

Gorgonemilezola · 15/06/2024 23:28

You need to move. Our Waitroses aren't like that at all. I shop in them for a start.

StripedPiggy · 15/06/2024 23:28

I wonder where this is? My local Waitrose in Leicestershire is always full of OAPs who go in every day because the staff are nice & take time to have a chat with them.

TomWambsgansSwans · 15/06/2024 20:48

@Lavenderandbrown ooh what are the hashtags for the Instagram movement?

I’m a newer user of IG but there is a search bar and you can try “dressing better”. If you look at IG at all it’s not an uncommon daily reel and if you follow or like it (❤️button) the algorithm will send you additional posts. I came across it just by it appearing on my reel. Sorry this isn’t much help!

HRTQueen · 15/06/2024 23:31

the Waitrose near me is like this

majority of customers are wealthier and have the money (and often the time) to look after themselves it’s as simple as that

when life isn’t made so stressful because of lack of money, you live in a lovely house, can afford nice things/holidays/help with everyday things like cleaning while you may have other problems the drudgery of life isn’t always quite so heavy

StarDolphins · 15/06/2024 23:32

I shop at Waitrose & I look like Wonka’s grandad. I definitely don’t talk lovingly to my little darling DD, more like “turn the volume down” or “no, put it back”. Everyone else is the same as me at my Waitrose too.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 16/06/2024 01:45

You're being silly! I shop in Waitrose and I'm far from slim! My local Waitrose is a mix of 'ordinary' people and then you get some that are clearly well-to-do, but it's generally very much a mix!! All shapes and sizes, mix of ethnicities even though our area is predominately white.

Shop wherever you want and don't worry about other people, just focus on yourself and your own life. If you're not happy with yourself, take action and do something to lose weight, as I am doing, but I'm doing it for me, not because I shop in Waitrose 😉

LostSightOfLife · 16/06/2024 06:17

Well, the reason they are all so slim is the prices are so high that they can only afford one lettuce leaf a week. And when the VAT is added to school fees it’ll be one lettuce leaf a month. The poor loves.

BeaFuddled · 15/06/2024 21:52

I was in Waitrose earlier in a pair of old joggers, no make up, with unbrushed hair.

Why hadn't you brushed your hair?

I literally roll in to Waitrose in my PJs and greasy hair on days when I feel particularly unbothered

Why?

Because it's a supermarket, not Fashion Week, and it doesn't check you for makeup and clothes labels before you're allowed to shop.

You need to address what’s causing you to be overweight and grumpy.
If you feel that Waitrose clientele have shone a spotlight on this then it’s up to you if you want to change .
It’s not always a bad thing to model yourself on an image of how you want to be if it helps you to move forward. Just remember you’ll still essentially be the same person, living the same life under the surface.

Roseyjane · 16/06/2024 08:15

I live in an affluent area, my Waitrose has all sorts, from the elderly to single blokes to the harassed mum and everything in between.

id also bet good money so did yours.

Stop looking at everyone else and get on with your shopping.

backinthebox · 16/06/2024 08:24

Waitrose is our nearest supermarket. Everyone locally shops in there. Not just the slim fashionable people. I went in last night in my leggings and crocs. Did not feel self conscious at all.

fiestaforevertilnow · 16/06/2024 08:40

Despite being very comfortably off I dress like a scruff. I shop wherever it suits, Waitrose, M&S, Lidl, Aldi.

The only place I have been obviously followed as a suspected shoplifter was B&M - I found it bloody hilarious. 😂

As others have said, my money's as good as anyone else's, and if anyone looks down their nose at me I don't care.

radishpatch · 16/06/2024 08:42

I'm fat, I shop in Waitrose. I also don't always "lovingly" interact with my kids, especially when shopping Grin

Shout me next time you go, and I'll walk round with you Grin

ChopstickNovice · 16/06/2024 08:44

Our Waitrose seems full of totally normal people. Including very stressed parents of kids!

ProjectEdensGate · 16/06/2024 08:47

When I live doesn't even have a waitrose! So you are posher than I am for a start. The most upmarket we have is a Tesco.

Where my mum lives has a waitrose. The local drug dealers use the Car park for their business and it's also the worst supermarket in the area for shoplifters. You don't get that kind of riff raff in Sainsbury's!

PeanutsArentNuts · 16/06/2024 08:57

TerrorOwls · 15/06/2024 20:38

This Waitrose is in quite an affluent area in London. I live in the neighbouring not so affluent area. I also don't feel like that in M&S because that's on the high street and everyone is in there.

This is key. I also live in London and experience something like culture shock when I go into one of the posh bubbles. There used to be a pretty grotty Waitrose where I live (that's now a much nicer Aldi) and it was nothing like one of the fancy Waitroses.

ReplenishMyCoffee · 16/06/2024 09:02

I avoid my local Waitrose as it’s stuffed full of entitled man babies standing in front of the salad, blocking everyone else.

Seriously. Every single time I go there. It’s like they’ve never been to a supermarket before and don’t know how to behave. Maybe they are retired and doing it for giggles or maybe they are newly divorced. Whatever, they are really really fucking irritating.

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/06/2024 09:08

Cupboardsarefull · 15/06/2024 20:18

Yes my local Waitrose is like this too.
I'm also overweight, a single parent and feel like shit walking around most places. Confidence is through the floor. I can afford to shop in Waitrose though, at least I have that.

Get yourself onto the Mounjaro threads. It'll be a life changer.

TerrorOwls · 16/06/2024 09:28

@PeanutsArentNuts I think you've got exactly what I mean. It was a culture shock. And I'm not exactly roughing it or gorging on processed shit but the difference seemed massive.
It got to me because ideally, I want to be slim and look fab in casuals, swanning around not worrying how much things cost.

BugBugTheTornado · 16/06/2024 09:54

This made me chuckle.

DH, DD2 and I went to Waitrose yesterday - not because we usually do, it is just the closest supermarket to where we were parked.

DH had just walked out the barbers and had a fresh haircut so looked smart and polished, I was dressed smart casually in a 'allocated for work' outfit (and him a shirt and jeans) cos I hadn't put the clean washing away and that's what was first to grab from the bedside pile, and DD was being uncharacteristically cute as the barber has JUST given her a sweet.

We probably looked 100x better and more harmonious than we usually do, but rest assured, it was all smoke and mirrors 😂

3peassuit · 16/06/2024 09:59

I went to Waitrose in my gardening clothes. Hope I wasn’t judged.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 16/06/2024 10:07

I like Waitrose because I can buy potatoes loose, one person doesn't need a kilo of potatoes. It also has a cheese and deli counter and a butchers (so does Morrisons but they don't sell potatoes loose). Couldn't care less about other people when I'm in there.

I also like farm shops for the same reason they have cheese and deli counters, but also butchers.

I go in ripped jeans and a scruffy hoodie or on my way home from the gym, they recognise me though so don't bat an eyelid. Quite often see workman in there or people who have obviously been horse riding/running/cycling covered in mud.

AstonMartha · 16/06/2024 10:18

BTW the people you mention are far too busy helicopter parenting with loud voices to notice anyone but themselves.

What a bizarre assumption @hastalav! How do you know this?
