So they want to replace PIP/DLA money with vouchers?

moneyinthebinthatsmrtim · 15/06/2024 07:45

I don't understand it. It is really worrying me.

This payment helps pay for so many things. I doubt these vouchers would cover that, or give the freedom to shop or buy from where you want or need to.

I included DLA because it's really just the child's version of PIP. Eventually, my profoundly disabled child will be an adult and will have to be on PIP

Is there really any truth in this? I can't see any articles directly quoting Labour or Conservative. I might just be in such a worry that I have missed that bit

Apologies if there is another thread on this too. I am happy to get this one taken off if that's the case

I agree@Mrsredlipstick PIP is very hard to obtain. It is sad that you are left feeling useless. Nobody should be having to feel that way, there are other values to be recognized, other than being capable of working, etc.

The consultation period ends 5days into opening of the next Parliament.
After that it will be reviewed and any suggestions deemed acceptable considered and put into place or not.
The consultation is considering ( amongst other things )

  • how people are assessed and how often
  • whether assessment for PIP should be based on condition only or personal experience
  • reliability of current assessments
  • the use of vouchers, catalogues and grants
  • direct therapy and other areas of support
  • the use of cash

I have no idea.
No one can say for sure unless they have already seen the results, which no one has as the consultation is ongoing.
All we know for sure is that Nothing is being discounted.
It will be a while though before we know anything

Nobody knows on here. Not in the near future, next year, the year after that... Nobody knows.

It's not going to be soon though so breathe for now.

OK, I'm going to do this in short words so that you might finally understand it: PIP is not just for people who are out of work. People who work get it too. Like my son.

Got it now? No?

Well said!

It’s like asking how long is a length of string.
However.
Based on previous consultations mentioned on the Government website the average time frames are one year from completion of consultation.
ie….to take on board changes deemed necessary, but no one has any idea what these might be.

AutumnCrow · 21/06/2024 18:20

Yes indeed.

I have recently used some PIP money to buy some technology that ALLOWS ME TO WORK MORE EFFICIENTLY FROM HOME.

<Ooh, I quite like shouting>

Will Access to Work not cover that?

I did look into it but was defeated by something in the small print (that contradicts what is on the government website) and just thought 'oh sod it' and side-stepped it, and paid up myself with the assistance PIP money.

I have to say though that the staff at Access to Work were really incredibly pleasant and helpful. Very different culture from the main DWP.

Postscript: I've just looked at the Gov.UK website again and I should be eligible. You know what, I'm going to enquire again and this time challenge it. Everything I have will need upgrading / replacing at some point. So thank you!

Honestly, I would try not to worry about it.
For starters, the Tories would need to win for this to even be considered. And then, there will be considerable push back and campaigning by the various disability organisations/charities out there.
They are just trying to appeal to the voters out there who blame disabled/unemployed for the dire straits we are in. They are encouraging people to punch down.
Saying that, DLA/PIP does need to be reformed... and in favour of people claiming it. It is ridiculous how many applications for it go to tribunal. And people with life long/degenerative conditions should not have to have reassessments.

Until a letter comes through your door detailing the changes, then try and keep it out of your head (easier said than done!).

That was a nice post to try and reassure the pp.
Nice to see there's still people with empathy.

Thanks Smile

I was in a panic myself when Rishi was on about the changes to the WCA (I am on LCWRA), but some kind folk on here reassured me that even if it did come in, it would be years before it got to existing claimants anyway, and that is if Conservatives are voted back in.
The various disability groups out there will campaign hard against stuff like this.

Thevelvelletes · 21/06/2024 22:13

As you said the punching down,it sickens me that the vulnerable in society are the Scapegoats for all that ails the UK.
I was told that with medical advances there may be a cure in the near future for my dw oesteoporosis/osteoarthritis.....by a UC work coach...had to inform him otherwise.

Whooper · 21/06/2024 22:15

I'd be happy with vouchers if it could be used for cleaners, gardeners and respite care. But I doubt they'll do that.

AutumnCrow · 21/06/2024 22:18

Something else I've thought of that is weird about PIP - you can't apply online and/or upload documents and colour photographs online.

There may have been a trial (?) but for most people it's paper, paper copies and print-outs of supporting paperwork only. And snail mail - with tight deadlines for reviews.

A member of the DWP staff in the sensory impairment team told me that all colour images submitted, via post or through that sensory team, will all end up scanned, uploaded, and eventually available to the assessor on screen in ... poor quality black & white. (Note also: 'available to' the assessor, not necessarily seen.)

Unbelievably crap system.

That would be considered luxuries by some.. and why should their tax money go on that? I have a friend who uses her PIP to go to the hair dressers. She goes once a week to have her hair washed, as she can't lift her arms above her head.

Hell, I saw comments on here about how a taxi paid by PIP for a boy with ASD is a "luxury" because he is "choosing" not to go on the bus. Total lack of understanding about ND conditions.

The worst was someone who was asking why the anorexic DD of a poster would need PIP because "she doesn't have food costs".

Thevelvelletes · 21/06/2024 22:25

Holy fuck,that's callous.
What kind of mindset must a person have to write that.

Well they're arseholes and don't understand the complex needs of people living with a variety of disabilities.

People who are lucky and privileged enough not to know how shite it is to live with disabilities and the demoralising process you have to go through to prove it, and get some money so you can try to live like everyone else.

Do people not see that targeting the most vulnerable in society is not the answer.

are people really ok with the idea of making life even harder for people with disabilities?

Unfortunately, disabled people are the scapegoats for everything nowadays, thanks to this bastard government's relentless demonising of them. 'Rishi Sunak - the PM who thinks that disability is a lifestyle choice'.
