If your dishwasher is over 7 years old...

What brand is it?

Ours has just died after 6 years. Previous one was the same age when it conked out.
I know this is about the average life of them but wondering if it's worth forking out a bit more for a Bosch or whatever. Not bothered about fancy features, just want it to wash well (preferably without the arms getting blocked every 5 mins!)

For reference our past ones have been Kenwood/Russell Hobbs
Also live in a hard water area which doesn't help at all.

Miele 9 years old. No problems.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 14/06/2024 20:10

My Miele (RIP, much missed) did 20 years of solid service.

Garlicker · 14/06/2024 20:12

My last one was a 35-year-old Bosch, still working when I moved (no space in this kitchen). They don't make 'em like they used to ...

Our Bosch recently died aged 18.

I dont think the new ones are made the same as that old one.

(It was BRILLIANT and washed everything, perfectly, first time, always, with no rinsing or anything)

Our new one is John Lewis as it was the only one that fitted in our bespoke, hand made, 20 years ago kitchen. (I wanted a miele but none could fit).

The Hotpoint dishwasher we got in 1984 (when I was a young child) was excellent and lasted about 30 years

Upallnight2 · 14/06/2024 20:28

My zanussi was built in with our new build, its 9 and had no issues.

The washing machine however lasted 2 years 🙄

Mines a bisch and about 10 years old. Still going strong!

Bosch I meant 🫣

Justploddingonandon · 14/06/2024 20:35

I've got a beko which is 10 years old ( I think, it's integrated and came with the house) and still going. I would actually quite like to replace it as it's annoying in other ways, but can't justify a replacement when it works.

Why are your arms getting blocked?

Do you mean the holes are getting blocked up? Or the arms aren't moving?

Make sure you're using salt.
Make sure you're descaling stuff if needed
Make sure you are using a dishwasher cleaner
Clean your filters etc
Dose correctly (eg, don't just chuck the tablet/powder.in the dishwasher at the beginning, put it in the detergent tray - LOADS of people I know do this, and wonder why their dishes isn't cleaning properly)

cheercaptain · 14/06/2024 20:35

AEG. Nearly 10yrs old. Hard water, no softener but use salt

JustNormalMen · 14/06/2024 20:36

AEG. Only a slimline so goes on twice most days

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 14/06/2024 20:37

We have an 11 year old Bosch.

SwedishEdith · 14/06/2024 20:39

Our 13 year old Siemens has just died this week. We've ordered a Bosch - JL's "bestseller".

BertieBotts · 14/06/2024 20:40

Siemens and I believe it is 10/11 years old. We moved into a rented flat and it was here, but I took the door seal out completely at some point to wash it and it had a 2013 date stamp in it.

Still works even though the door spring has gone and it has been robustly abused. When I took the door seal out, it was the first time some parts of it had been cleaned out in the 5 years we were here and honestly, I think in the entire 10 years it has been used.

It is probably on its last legs, but it's very well made, and I really appreciate that you can fully detach every single part that gets re-used water pushed through it because honestly the state it was in when I did clean it out, I was all set to order a new one, had it in the basket on a website and then waited for DH to get home from work to do a credit check and by the time he got back it was sold out so I persevered with cleaning it and I was somehow able to get it to like-new status.

I am extremely impressed with the quality of it.

(Siemens and Bosch are the same company).

BlackEyedBeanie · 14/06/2024 20:42

Neff here, 20 years old (touches wood) and going strong. My service chap said that the inner of my model is moulded from one piece when he came to install my new oven. He told me that when I have to replace it it’s worth buying a more expensive dishwasher with a one piece inner as it’s the joints that go first.

CordylineCapybara · 14/06/2024 20:44

Bosch. At least 10 years old

BertieBotts · 14/06/2024 20:45

Oh yes the interior of mine is a single piece too. That makes sense plus any part which can get food trapped in it must be able to come out.

Forget fancy features. Those two things are the most important.

Actually the one thing I wish mine would do which it doesn't, and I'm not sure any do - I wish the spinny arms would open to allow cleaning inside. All you can really do is run soapy water through them which I don't think is enough.

Couldn't you soak them in the bath/large sink or something? You could use pipe cleaners a bit?

FizzyStream · 14/06/2024 20:49

Zanussi. Ours is 11 years old and still going strong. My dad bought us ours when I was pregnant with DS1 and it was a godsend for washing all the bottles etc. DS1 is 11 in a few months and the dishwasher works just as well as it did when new. Just looks a bit battered as it got a dent when we moved house!

MinceFlies · 14/06/2024 20:52

Fisher & Paykel double drawer, family of 4, almost 20 now.

Not integrated, completely gorgeous!

Toolateforteeth · 14/06/2024 20:55

Our last one was Siemens, about 18yrs old, had no problems with it ever, until it died. Replacement is a Bosch, now 4yrs old, very happy with it.

I have done this but having seen the gunk that accumulated on other parts, I don't like the idea that that same gunk is inside the arms lurking where it can't be reached. I suppose I could soak them in a bleach solution to neutralise any bacteria?

BertieBotts · 14/06/2024 20:56

I know I could buy new ones but I just feel like they will get dirty again.

BlackEyedBeanie · 14/06/2024 20:57

I use one of those cleaning things once a month on a hot wash. Never thought about the arms.
