If your dishwasher is over 7 years old...

What brand is it?

Ours has just died after 6 years. Previous one was the same age when it conked out.
I know this is about the average life of them but wondering if it's worth forking out a bit more for a Bosch or whatever. Not bothered about fancy features, just want it to wash well (preferably without the arms getting blocked every 5 mins!)

For reference our past ones have been Kenwood/Russell Hobbs
Also live in a hard water area which doesn't help at all.

Miele 13 years

The 14 year old builder's Diplomat dishwasher that was in when we moved in died dramatically and was replaced with a Bosch, 3.5 year ago. We went for serie 6 because the serie 4 were made very differently and had to give up on the idea of another integrated one because there was hardly anything available at the time, thanks to the pandemic.

Indesit, 7 years old on everyday, not had an issue with it.

Bosch, at least 16 years old, used once a day every day, in a soft water area.
Would get another Bosch again.

Ours is Neff, ten years old and going strong, run once and often twice a day since it went in.

We've also had good reliability from Bosch appliances, as has my mum. MIL has had good luck with Neff, her Neff oven must've lasted 30 years.

Neff, Bosch and Siemens are all the same family of companies and have a lot of equivalent models. You don't see much Neff in the UK, these days.

Ivesaidenough · 15/06/2024 00:24

25 year old Neff here. (Also hard water)

For hard water area, use salt even though you supposedly dont need to. I started using it and the difference was amazing. Can be hard to find but can get it on Amazon if cant find locally.

You ARE supposed to use salt. Especially in a hard water area! Don't know which country you are in but in the UK all supermarkets sell it.

The only issue with my Bosch is the cutlery container has to be replaced. And obviously it’s out of warranty.

Oh yes the interior of mine is a single piece too. That makes sense plus any part which can get food trapped in it must be able to come out.

Forget fancy features. Those two things are the most important.

Actually the one thing I wish mine would do which it doesn't, and I'm not sure any do - I wish the spinny arms would open to allow cleaning inside. All you can really do is run soapy water through them which I don't think is enough.

Soapy water is useless for cleaning and descaling the spray arms. Use the sachets of d/w cleaner from e-spares (it’s basically an acid) and the whole machine comes up clean and descaled including the spray arms.

Mine is a John Lewis one and must be more than 10 years old. Maybe 15. It’s had a new heater which was cheap, and I’ve replaced the spray arms and the little wheels on the drawers. No other problems and it works really well.

Wallywobbles · 15/06/2024 05:35

Our Bosch is 7 and seems as good as new. Our Miele is 13 and we've changed some pieces over the years but still seems fine.

Yeah- it’s weird. We are in a super hard water area and I went in 4 supermarkets sand none of them had it. Possibly I just timed it badly and there was some manufacturers supply issue. Anyway, got an Amazon subscription now.

I can telly you what our last one died of, the plastic base warped and leaked. It was a Bosch but a cheap model. We were advised to get one with a stainless steel base inside and hopeful of a few more years.

So, all in all seems dishwashers are quite decently made. Mind you there's not much that should go wrong with them. Well worth the financial cost if you are looking at price per use for the majority.

I've had German made Bosh machines (some are now made in Turkey) and never any issues. Currently have a 10 year old AEG. Small plastic items have needed replacing and I can't move the top drawer anymore and the customer service is the only thing that has put me off buying another one when this one does fail.

There's very little to go wrong with them

They're a pump, heating element and a low power spinning motor!

As long as it's kept clean and descaling, and salting etc happens - they should last absolutely ages!

:)

Beko, 6yrs old and (whispers) working great!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 15/06/2024 08:54

My DM has a Miele that’s as old as time and works perfectly

RidingMyBike · 15/06/2024 16:35

Siemens, 12 years old, moved house twice with it and still going strong! Never had any problems with it.

Barleysugar86 · 15/06/2024 16:37

Miele. I think it cost over £700 but we bought it soon after moving in in 2012 and it's still going.
