Contraceptive Implant Removal - is this normal?

I'm on my 3rd implant and I've always had to have them removed roughly 6 months before they expire as I just start to bleed constantly. Last 2 times I just called my GP, was offered an appointment within a few weeks and it was done. Admittedly the last time was 5+ years ago.

This time round I'm at the end of my tether. I phoned my GP back in April to request removal. They said that the process is now that they refer on to a certain clinic, and I'd be contacted within 2 weeks to be offered an appointment. 2 weeks came and went and they never got in contact, so I called again and was told it might be up to 4 weeks. So when 5 weeks came and went I called again and they said it would be 6 weeks. I asked if this would be 6 weeks just for the phonecall and then I'd have to wait another age for the actual appointment and was told she couldn't say.

Anyway it's been over 6 weeks and nothing. Everytime I chase I'm just told I'm on their list. Meanwhile I'm bleeding and having brown discharge constantly, it isn't enough to wear a tampon comfortably so it's just ruining all my underwear. I also feel really hormonal and sad which I'm sure is linked as it was like this last time.

I've tried looking for private clinics near me and there is nothing. I've asked them for the direct number for the clinic so I can phone for cancellations and nothing. I don't know what to do now, I just want it out.

Has anyone been in this situation?? What can I do to get this thing out of me?

The other annoying thing is that DH and I would actually quite like to try for a 2nd later this year and now I'm thinking what if we can't because I can't get this bloody thing removed. Arghh.

Can you wear pant liners/sanitary pads to save your underwear?
There can be delays at our place depending on availability of nurses due to holiday/illness or just the volume of chronic illness appointment they are having to do. Something like implant removal would be low priority in these situations.
Can you look up the nearest sexual health clinic near you and see if they could remove quicker?

I feel your pain.

Mine is over a year overdue for replacement; and there is absolutely no way to get it sorted. The GP surgery doesn’t do them, they closed the walk in clinic, and the only sexual health clinic left insists you make appointments online, despite their system not working.

I was having the same trouble.

mine was well overdue last year but I couldn’t get any appointments in a 50 mile radius in the three months that the online calendar stretched.

luckily for me i happened to be diagnosed with early menopause (obviously that’s not lucky!) but because of that when I was there for my 3 month follow up appointment and to get my bloods done for the genetic testing we discussed it because hrt can put you back in a fertile window (which is why menopause is a prime time for unexpected pregnancy) so nurse checked and the doctor happened to be free to do it there and then.

no idea what I would have done otherwise!
