Mad Men Is it worth watching ?

Appreciate that I’m very very late to the game ! Watched the first two episodes last night, enjoyed it somewhat but can’t work out whether it’s worth watching the other 7 seven series….. Read that the last episode of all was apparently brilliant. Is it really that good ?

I hate overly long series but this is the exception- definitely worth it!

HammockFullOfRats · 14/06/2024 07:56

Yes. But it does get a bit soapy after a few series IMO.

Thanks !

Apparently it’s all about Elizabeth Moss’ character (Peggy) and her rise in the advertising business..(had a quick look on wiki 😉)

I really loved it! Definitely worth watching.

Candleabra · 14/06/2024 08:00

Definitely. First three series are amazing (but it’s all good)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 14/06/2024 08:05

Yes, I watched it when it first came out and definitely worth sticking with.

olympicsrock · 14/06/2024 08:06

I really enjoy it.

FoFanta · 14/06/2024 08:08

Yes, definitely worth sticking with. It's a slow burn story, and an interesting look at the myth of the "American Dream". Some fantastic acting, beautiful people, stunning costumes.

WelshNerd · 14/06/2024 08:13

One of my favourite ever shows.

NotOnThe · 09/01/2025 10:54

Loving it 🥰

Pedallleur · 09/01/2025 10:59

I really enjoyed it. the attitudes of the day are obviously wrong now. Women were just office fodder. Suitable for typing, poss managing the other women and bedding. Wives were at home looking after the children and/or drinking. Everyone smokes! Don Draper is great but will bed any woman he can. Everyone obsessed with the next account.

It's about a lot more than that!

Deadringer · 09/01/2025 11:17

I had high hopes for it but found it very boring. Maybe I will give it another go.

Deathraystare · 09/01/2025 11:33

It was quite good but the casual sexism and smoking even in bed annoyed me!!!

ethelredonagoodday · 09/01/2025 11:47

My favourite series ever. One of the seasons towards the end was a bit flat, but rest of it is brilliant. If you want action packed, this isn't it, but if you're after character driven narrative, it's brilliant.

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/01/2025 11:54

I think it is a classic. As PP said, it is a slow burn. The characters slowly reveal themselves as the series progresses. One of the least superficial series I have ever seen, yet so gripping. I still find it difficult to watch Jon Hamm in other things, he will always be Don Draper to me.

dothedanceofjoy · 09/01/2025 11:59

Oh, I loved it. It is slow burn but so very engrossing.

Also loved the period-accurate smoking and sexism, unlike a PP. It really takes me out of it when a period film or TV show has anachronistic attitudes.

Don Draper to me is one of those characters that's so well-drawn, so well-acted, so fascinating I still randomly think about him, years after I watched the show.

NorthRiding · 09/01/2025 12:00

Yes! It's worth watching for the wardrobe alone. There's a great blog (Tom and Lorenzo) which analyses the language of the clothes across the whole thing, and how subtly they reflect the themes and character development - it's obvious that an incredible amount of thought went into everything.

It's interesting to watch some of the over-familiar 60s tropes play out in the lives of real, albeit very affluent, American people, instead of the usual British perspective; there's a great moment when Don Draper, the classic reinvented man of the 50s who prides himself on being able to tap into exactly what people want right now, tries to listen to Revolver, an LP his much-younger wife has brought home, and... it means absolutely nothing to him. He swipes the needle off the record with a mixture of disgust and bewilderment and you can almost see the pivot from his world to the next generation's.

I still think about the characters, and wonder how the rest of their lives carried on.

AreNeepsSwedeOrTurnips · 09/01/2025 12:00

Yes! This and Homeland are the only two long multi series worth sticking with IMO.

rainydaysaway · 09/01/2025 12:09

Mad Men is my favourite series - I've watched it multiple times. The story and characters are so rich.

Almahart · 09/01/2025 12:11

It's absolutely brilliant

debauchedsloth · 09/01/2025 12:27

Just to check if we share tastes - I've never tried Madmen but always wondered, and am looking for a new mega-series.... do those of you who love it also love Breaking Bad and say Succession and Better Call Saul?

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 09/01/2025 13:00

I loved season 1. This thread has prompted me to start season 2.

3peassuit · 09/01/2025 13:02

It’s a great show, one of my all time favourites.
