Would a partial refund request be appropriate?

Had a wooden bed delivered today.
Drive informed me it had been damaged in transit and that I could refuse delivery.

I wasn't able to do this as I had already taken my sons old bed to the tip and he was staying at a relatives as we were doing a room makeover as a surprise.

He would be back tomorrow after school and the new bed was the focus of the new room as he had requested one.

The damage is not structural but cosmetic.

I told the driver I felt I had no choice but to take it in the circumstances as DS would be without a bed otherwise.

He marked it as damaged and took photos.

The box had been pierced and cut open and the wood had an indent and long scratch.

I'm going to attempt to hide it but obviously I paid for a new bed and if I had returned it they would have lost out on the postage it cost to send it, the return postage, the postage to send out another bed and they wouldn't have been able to resell this one at full price.

So WIBU to ask for a discount and if so, what % ?

Yes absolutely ask , I had similar with some oak bedroom furniture and they gave me 15% off

Scousefab · 13/06/2024 19:34

Yes I would contact them for a discount. Depends how bad the damage is on what percentage you will get back. Just contact them and discuss sometimes it says in the terms and conditions you want in excess of 10 percent

This is the damage. On the side piece of the bed.

Is that the underside of the bed?

edit, sorry! Didn’t read.

EatCrow · 13/06/2024 19:40

That’s pretty bad. I’d be quite firm and see how they respond. There’s always feedback and reviews (with pics) if they aren’t forthcoming.

Alicewinn · 13/06/2024 19:42

Looks more like 20%-25% discount. That's not something you can sand off is it?

Muffinmanfromdrurylane · 13/06/2024 19:44

We had similar and they offered us 30% off. We decided the damage was too bad and asked for a new one to be sent. It arrived even worse. 3 beds later we finally got a bed but after it taking nearly 3 months of sleeping on a mattress on the floor they gave us a £150 voucher which we spent on Pillows etc. Bed was £2.5k so 30% was a decent chunk.

Boxina · 13/06/2024 20:12

I had similar with an outdoor sofa, they gave us such a big discount we pretty much for it for free. I would definitely press home how damaged it is and go for a replacement or large discount.

I'll ring in the morning before we assemble it.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly precious.

You’re not being precious at all. I’d also explain your personal details and why you had to accept delivery but In different, less pressured circumstances you would most certainly have refused delivery. Press on and don’t be easily pleased. Good luck. Hope your son is happy with his surprise! Lovely thing to do.

I rang this morning and they said they ate reviewing the photos and email I sent and will be in touch.

I'm being impatient though as I don't know whether to put the bed together as I don't know their policy.

DS is home at 4.

They're refunding what amounts to 22%

That's great news! Did you get the bed put together in time for DS getting home???

mitogoshi · 14/06/2024 17:41

That seems fair enough

He asked to stay over again so all that rushing and he's not coming home till tomorrow morning now!
But it's good as a few things aren't finished anyways
