Anyone understand Paypal 'disputes'?

In a pickle here. I receive quarterly payments from various companies who distribute my art work. I have been with this particular company for 5 years with no issues at all.

This month on the 1st of June I received notification that my payment had arrived into my paypal account, as normal.
Shortly after, on the 4th, I was informed by paypal that I had started a dispute and the payment was on hold.
I called Paypal on the phone and was told to fill in a small box to explain what the payment had been for. I was not given a reason for why I was accuse of starting a dispute.
She told me it would probably rectify in a few days.

It didn't. I received another notification that the payment was now completely cancelled. I was then charged $15 for starting the dispute! I shall be calling them again but would love to know if anyone here has any experience.

What unnerves me is that I have emailed the company twice in the past 4 days with no response.
