Complaining To The Banking Ombudsman

Has anyone done this? If so, can you talk me through the process? Thinking of whether you complain by letter, or email, and whether you have to have had formal notice that the complaints' procedure has been exhausted. Any information would be much appreciated.

It's the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) - their website is pretty helpful and you can upload details of your complaint directly.

You will usually need to have exhausted the bank's complaint process though, so either it's been 8 weeks since you made your complaint and they haven't resolved it one way or another, or have given a final response that you are not happy with. In either case the bank must write to you and tell you this and provide FOS details to you.

ETA: they do have a phone number too and are usually pretty helpful in explaining whether your complaint is something they cover, and the process you need to follow.
