Gift for my DD who has just found out that she achieved a first

So bloody proud.
Our DD got the result today, she achieved a first. Unbelievable considering her subject was maths and she caught Covid 4 times in her first year.
What be a suitable gift/reward?

Do you have a budget in mind? What's your daughter like? Does she like jewellery? Would she enjoy a weekend away to celebrate?

Jolly well done to your daughter!

Likesomemorecash · 13/06/2024 18:34

Maybe I'm old, but it never occurred to me that anyone should give a gift for the first class degree I got.

Is this a thing now? I'd have thought that forking out for graduation was enough.

mitogoshi · 13/06/2024 18:36

My parents bought me an outfit for graduation that was also an interview suit (long time ago) I bought dd a round of drinks via the Wetherspoons app!

A First in bloody maths. That is genius territory to me

Just give her some money. I am sure that she will appreciate it

My DD graduated last year and I got her a Kate Spade handbag and laptop bag.

RaininSummer · 13/06/2024 18:41

Oh dear. I didn't buy my daughter anything for her First, her masters or her PhD. How crap am I?

GrazingSheep · 13/06/2024 18:42

No. It’s not a ‘thing’ now.
My parents got us all gifts when we graduated many years ago.

GrazingSheep · 13/06/2024 18:43

We got our ds a gift and will do the same for dd.

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2024 18:44

Wow, that’s some achievement op and I’d also want to buy a commemorative present!
My dd has one year left so I’m not at this stage (and she may well not get a first but I’ll still get her something because I want to), I’d probably go for some nice jewellery as she loves it, maybe a special perfume too.
Congrats to your daughter, you must be so proud 💐

BiscuitTins · 13/06/2024 18:45

Wow! Congratulations to your DD!
It depends what her finances are like, but I think jewellery, or something else she can keep would be a lovely gift.
Obviously if money is tight, you could just gift cash, but it’s such an achievement I think it would be nice to have something that will last

If you didn’t even think to get a card I’d think that was pretty crap!
If you did get a card then it’s not such a leap to think some people may have bought a present to go with it.

Fuck what a miserable existence that sounds. Why not give someone a gift as an acknowledgement of how proud you are for their achievements? It's arguably more logical than a gift for their birthday.

OP I think a lovely meal out to celebrate would be a nice way of acknowledging this amazing achievement. Well done to your daughter. Star

Lucy304 · 13/06/2024 18:47

My mum bought me some earrings which I wore at my graduation, and again on my wedding day Smile.

Congratulations to your daughter, you must be so proud.

Mydogisagentleman · 13/06/2024 18:47

She's quite alternative, bi which goes without saying. ADHD and autism, tatts and piercings. Left her horribly abusive partner during her finals.
We are thinking about paying for YET another tattoo.
Can you see how proud we are..

No, I don't think I lived a miserable existence. Reflecting back, some of my friends did receive gifts/money. I don't think my mum realised what a double first meant, iyswim, so didn't realise that it was a huge achievement in the 1990s.

Oh another tattoo would be a brilliant idea! Something she will be able to talk about if anyone asks and an additional benefit is she will be able to include a much deserved brag at the same time for how super smart she is. 😄

As someone with tattoos, I think that would be an amazing gesture and a lovely way for her to celebrate

CassandraWebb · 13/06/2024 18:58

Lovely of you to want to acknowledge it. It sounds like it's not just the first but the coping with a lot as well.

My dad bought me a Montblanc pen as a gift to congratulate me. I still have it now, two decades later.

I hadn't just got a first, I got it despite coping with an awful and harrowing tragedy so the pen is a lovely reminder of how I came through that

RaininSummer · 13/06/2024 18:59

I can't remember if I got a card but maybe I did for the PhD. She certainly knew how proud I was though without gifts. We did go to her graduation and out to dinner in London though. Didn't do financial incentives for GCSEs either.

Lochroy · 13/06/2024 19:00

Amazing news! I guess all my ideas are probably a bit to conventional, but I'd be thinking something she wouldn't splash out on herself, a really nice handbag, jewellery or expensive pen. Something which she wouldn't grow out of, nor which would go out of fashion and which has enduring use.

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/06/2024 19:01

Wow, she is amazing.

I cannot comprehend getting a first in maths.

Thus probably is not the thread for you.

I bought my son a Mont Blanc pen when he qualified as a doctor. Not sure he has ever used it but it's a true keepsake as far as he is concerned.

Pourmeanotherwine · 13/06/2024 19:04

I've been wondering whether to get something for my dd or just to get prosecco and a card. Not got her full results yet but looking good so far.
