Sunak’s been flirting with her for ever. I’d be very pissed off if I was Mrs Sunak.

ETA This was last year.

I'm loving the Labour line that Starmer kept saying, and the double meaning behind it.

"Put country first, party second"

Cleverly done.

CassieMaddox · 13/06/2024 13:04

I was loving Starmers "strategy for growth" pitch. Totally totally up for it. Very different I thought, i liked it. Off to read the actual manifesto now 🤓

Checking in from Glasgowshire.

Thanks again.

First thoughts, a solid funded manifesto as a foundation to build upon.

I am reassured by that manifesto.

There is no mention of cutting welfare benefits and hounding those with mental health conditions like the Tories plan to do. It recognises that supporting disabled people to work if they are able is the way forward.

The devil is in the detail of course, but for now Labour has my vote. He is a die hard Corbyn supporter and despises Starmer!

pointythings · 13/06/2024 14:45

@IClaudine the welfare issue is very high up on the agenda for me too. I don't have a vote, but it's reassuring to see a party not rushing for the punitive approach as a first resort. Any fool can see that supporting people into finding and keeping work is the long term solution with winners all round.

Agh. My post makes no sense at the end. I meant to say my DH won't be pleased as he is a die hard Corbyn supporter!

Mine too, the manifesto appears pragmatic & sensible I haven’t read it yet just my take from the bits I saw on TV I did like his jibe about the circus.

Notonthestairs · 13/06/2024 15:31

I haven't read the manifessto yet - probably wont get to it until the weekend.
I gather it is made of policies that have already been announced.
I am ok with that.
I dont like policies introduced at the last minute to bribe the electorate.

I have laughed at a response on Twitter to the the idea of a Modernisation Committee tasked with reforming procedures, driving up standards and improving work place practices.

Sounds pretty sensible yes?

Apparently for some this means - no late night sittings. No more Victorian white tie for doorkeepers. T shirts in the commons.

The first makes life difficult for parents. The second two are just window dressing. They dont reference the driving up standards part - which I assume will be around making it less likely for staff to be sexually harrassed.

I can't be bothered to link to the twats - suffice to say they have never really got over leaving school/university.

It's interesting that this morning on R4 Today Amol Rajan was grilling Labour enforcer Pat McFadden on why aren't they interested in revising council tax bands/ property taxation in general

I listened to that.

Again it was another case of "why aren't you doing something we haven't questioned the current party about for 14 years and aren't questioning them about if they were to get in again".

A bit of light hearted flirty BANTZ with fascist populist Giorgia Meloni at G7

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/13/rishi-sunak-giorgia-meloni-g7-summit/

Sunak Meloni and Le Pen are from the same branch.

He had another love in with her at a conf (in Italy) for far right parties earlier in the year.

Unbelievable how far to the right the tories have gone since Thatcher/Major era.

Yep plenty Labour did that was never in their manifesto.

I 'm hoping Labour will be bolder, should they win, things like dentistry have to be fixed and that will take an awful lot of money to pay dentists what they get for private work.

Got my Labour sign up today, Anna Gelderd seems very capable.

BestIsWest · 13/06/2024 18:52

Got my Labour sign up today too. Although the winds are trying their best to blow it over.

IClaudine · 13/06/2024 19:01

Bit worried about the IFS comments over Labour's lack of detail on where the money will come from. That could be an open goal?

DuncinToffee · 13/06/2024 19:12

I have seen it being described as the Ming vase manifesto: change with caution

I was canvassed by Labour today, and met the candidate (who only stepped in a couple of weeks ago when the previous candidate left for personal reasons). New guy is only 31, I felt so old talking to him but he's very personable and I felt listened to, so that's much more hopeful than my previous Tory MP (who only sent standard auto signed pro forma replies to any question)

The Home Office has slipped out revised figures on the number of migrants being housed in hotels.

There were actually 35,686 asylum seekers being accommodated in hotels as of the end of march this year, 25% higher than previously disclosed.

I’m astonished the Home Office has done this. Have we given up on purdah?
