Hello, I want to celebrate my bday, nothing too ££ but somewhere lovely. I looked at escargot as they have a brilliant theatre menu for 24 and we eat early.

But I'm reluctant because it's changed hands recently, is it still as good?
Is there anywhere else please, not canteen style but a little bit special without ££ if that's possible in London.

I've not eaten there but DS has had romantic dinner and a friend celebrated her birthday at Coq d'Argent near St Pauls Cathedral and both said it was out of this world. DS's girlfriend works for a Michelin starred restaurant and she was impressed. Very very reasonable for what you get. I think a set three course dinner is under £40. And there is a rooftop garden too. I've had cocktails there before. Very pretty.

What counts as ££ in your view?

Bocca di Lupo is nice and does a lot pre-theatre menu.

If you haven’t tried Bancone that’s very affordable and nice surroundings.

Both nearby to L’Escargot.

Midnight family of 4, 200 absolutely maximum.

Do you mean £200 total for 4 including drinks and service? That will be tricky for most restaurants. I think you should look at set lunches as well as pre theatre meals too.

I hear good things about Richard corrigans place at the top of the national portrait gallery and that has a cracking view over trafalgar square too.

Have you tried the Granary Square Brasserie? Near Kings Cross. 2 course menu for £19.17 if you eat early. Not specially special but nice enough and very good value.

@MrsWobble3 I've heard about that but it's a teeny bit too far out.

@kittybloom

That ochre looks amazing, too pricey but may see if we can go to the bar
