Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school

Honestly this has really annoyed me, apart from the fact it's such crap - he came from a family where his parents were a GP and a pharmacist, it's like he's literally thought of the most working class stereotype and applied that. He's so out of touch and I don't know why this one has annoyed me so much but it really has.

I'm not much older than our prime minister and we didn't have one either, or holidays and not much in the way of any luxury items and guess what my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school despite them working very hard too.

I know Sky is expensive but...what a dick.

OMGsamesame · 12/06/2024 08:36

Too right. We didn't have sky, it's hardly a necessity. And that alone wouldn't have paid the fees. It's a ridiculous claim.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/06/2024 08:38

He is an idiot, we didn't have Sky only 4 channels. Showing my age now lol

Winchester in the 1990s would have cost maybe £15-20,000 a year for a boarding place?

We actually did get Sky TV in the late 90s but I'm pretty sure it didn't cost anything like that. And there is literally no way our parents could have afforded to send us to private school as day pupils, let alone boarding.

Loubelle70 · 12/06/2024 08:41

He shows his lack of awareness of economic issues. Therefore his privilege is showing. He did look like rabbit caught in headlights, we didn't have sky, wtf?. So out of touch and accusatory of people who aren't loaded. He had everything and more. The piece of......shhhhhit

Brooklyn70 · 12/06/2024 08:41

I read it today and I honestly thought it sounds like out of The Onion.

PricklyPearNoThornsPlease · 12/06/2024 08:41

He was born in 1980 - I’m not sure Sky was even around when he was a child, was it?

Ditto, Sky didn’t even exist when my parents sent me to private school 🤪

Nor did I have a mobile phone. We made sacrifices in those days! /s

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/06/2024 08:41

I grew up with 2 channels, then 3! I've never had Sky and don't feel deprived. The man has no clue about the sacrifices parents make just to feed and clothe their children. As a parent I didn't even think of these things as sacrifices just things I couldn't afford.

maudelovesharold · 12/06/2024 08:42

Rishi Sunak - man of the people. How tone deaf can you be?

I know hilarious 😂 he'll be telling us he didn't have an iPad when he was at school next 😂

FanofLeaves · 12/06/2024 08:43

Barely anyone of his generation would have had Sky tv. I’m 6 years younger and it was quite a special thing when I was a teenager, knowing someone who had it so we could all pile round and watch Scuzz and kerrang!

FatmanandKnobbin · 12/06/2024 08:43

What's his next statement, "my parents never got costa coffee so we could go abroad for holidays" or "my parents never paid for netflix so I could have horse riding lessons".

He's so out of touch it's laughable.

Snooglequack · 12/06/2024 08:44

He's right, stop lazily complaining about state schools and just don't have sky (or ever buy a latte) and your child will be PM in no time.

SisterAgatha · 12/06/2024 08:45

Poor poor sod. The horrors that boy has seen.

next headline “I once wore my pants two days in a row”

  • disclaimer the Conservative Party apologise for this misleading headline - it was not because all his other pants had holes, just because he forgot
newnamethanks · 12/06/2024 08:45

O poor Rishi, heartbreaking. Most children would rather have regular meals than Sky TV. How was it when you were queuing with your mum at a Food bank, Rishi? What's that? You've never been to a food bank? No, there were none when you were growing up, they are a result of Tory austerity. A handful at the beginning of austerity, over 2,500 now. And you're proud of your record? I disagree.

Frasers · 12/06/2024 08:45

Suspect everything sunak does annoys you op as you want labour.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/06/2024 08:45

Sky wasn't around when my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school.

sweetnessandlighter · 12/06/2024 08:46

Sky TV wasn't available until he was about 10 so as usual he's spouting bullshit to try and make himself look relatable.
Try going without food (never mind holidays and social activities and new clothes, which were a distant dream) as I did as a kid.

Kendodd · 12/06/2024 08:49

Maybe it's a message to private school parents now facing VAT on fees. Just cancel Netflix.

maudelovesharold · 12/06/2024 08:49

So - Rishi Sunak’s marker for deprivation is when your parents have to do without Sky, so they can send you to an extremely prestigious public school! Grin

Beezknees · 12/06/2024 08:49

I'm 10 years younger than him and Sky TV was a luxury even then. We couldn't afford it in my house, nor private school! We had 5 channels. My grandparents had Sky and it was such a treat going there and being able to watch Cartoon Network.

😂

I feel this thread could be very entertaining. What we went without to avoid private education.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/06/2024 08:53

My parents were one of the first to get Sky. My dad is sports mad so it appealed to him. Me and my mum used to watch rubbish on it. However, once I moved out we didn’t get it for years.

He’s completely out of touch with people. If I gave up my Sky subscription today, I still wouldn’t be able to pay for my kids (if they were school age) to go to the same school that he went to, because I don’t have £52k hanging about, each year, to pay for it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/06/2024 08:53

We've never had Sky, not because we can't afford it, but because it just seemed like a waste of money for us as there was very little on it we would want to watch.

Even without Sky, our poor deprived children had to go to the local comprehensive.
