Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school

Honestly this has really annoyed me, apart from the fact it's such crap - he came from a family where his parents were a GP and a pharmacist, it's like he's literally thought of the most working class stereotype and applied that. He's so out of touch and I don't know why this one has annoyed me so much but it really has.

I'm not much older than our prime minister and we didn't have one either, or holidays and not much in the way of any luxury items and guess what my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school despite them working very hard too.

A GP and a pharmacist would have been able to send their kids to private school in the 90s

One of the fanciest boarding schools?

To be fair to him (which isn't something I say often), he was a day student I think. Not boarding.

I wondered about that. He said his parents came here with nothing, yet a few years later they were able to send their kids to an exclusive private school?

Interesting point. Especially compared to say the tearing apart of the Middleton's who were classed as "commoners" but the press scrutised them for sending 3 children to Marlborough.. I have never seen the Sunak's rags to riches story scrutinised...

They should have been honest with him like my parents were when they deprived me of a Mr Frosty because it was ‘plastic tat’.

The cause of so much generational trauma - denial of Mr Frosty.

At the 2019 election, he got 64% of the votes in his constituency. His nearest rival got 16%.

I used to live in that constituency. I honestly think he could dance through Northallerton naked while throwing rotten tomatoes at the soldiers in Catterick and still win.

Haven't the boundaries changed though so he might have a bit more trouble now? I think there may now be some people in his consituency who aren't old, white and rich.
I expect he would be quite happy to lose his seat though so he could F off to America sooner rather than later and I expect The Tories might like it too so thay can blame their historic defeat all on him. The whole point of him is to be a scapegoat

“My Dad had to sell our pet Whippet and his flat cap to afford our annual four weeks in Bali”.

Poor Rishi, I’ve got visions of him on the phone to Esther Rantzen.

I’ve also deprived my children of a Mr Frosty for the same reason. It’s the circle of life.

Not sure where that's come from, Sky TV isn't essential.

One thing I would say is that some parents, although far better off than many of us, have to go without so they can send their DC to private schools - they do this as it's what their parents did and considered the norm/think it's the better option for their DC. DD was adamant she wanted a scholarship (and bursary) for sixth form and she went out and got one - we came across at least two parents who lived in run down properties as funds going on school fees, others that didn't have holidays, two siblings who had to work school hols for spending money.

His advisers absolutely hate him or he is deliberately trying to lose his own seat so he can get to California for the summer holidays.

But surely he could 'win the election' & immediately hand over to a new broom & still get to the US on time? (or are there 'purdah' type rules that mean he can't resign until Sept or something?

Also, who is showing this interview?

User135644 · 12/06/2024 10:17

Sky was niche in the early 90s and satellite dishes were deemed ugly.

SerendipityJane · 12/06/2024 10:17

It doesn't really matter, it's done it's job. Broadcaster 1: Sunak 0.

People have already got the juicy bits without the irritation of having to listen to the usual crap that surrounds it. I tip my hat to them.

Who says good journalism is dead ?

the80sweregreat · 12/06/2024 10:18

My parents wouldn't let me have a Mr frosty !
Or a games console ( the very old ones with tennis on it !) or that master mind game or a chopper bike ( the second hand bike shop bike was good enough for me)
We didn't even have a car.
I bet the Sunak's had a car.

echt · 12/06/2024 10:18

Not RTFT but think Sunak's advisers had picked up on whinging posts by a significant number of parents on MN about their sacrifices to school their children privately and thought it was a good look.

BiggerBoat1 · 12/06/2024 10:19

I sold my least favourite child to afford Netflix 🤣

Blackcats7 · 12/06/2024 10:19

I knew Rishi’s parents in a very slight way in that his mum’s very successful pharmacy (which she owned) was very close to where I went to college so I have been in there numerous times. His father was a very successful senior gp partner in the nearest practice.
The description of them given in the media does not adequately convey their degree of success and wealth.
The private school Rishi went to was Winchester College so not just any private school.
I highly doubt he went without anything at all.
He is scraping the barrel to try and find some common ground with ordinary people and it just won’t wash.

Didn't you need planning permission at one point.

Also, who remembers BSB and the "squarial"

myfitbitisfucked · 12/06/2024 10:20

My heart bleeds.

Like most other aspects of his campaign, the contempt for the voting public writ large. Couldn’t even be arsed to commit a few made up examples to memory that might have fleetingly hinted at some degree of authenticity for some people who might have been dim enough to feel some sense of camaraderie with him in this context.

I never got a Sindy doll, every other girl at school had Sindy except me 😡 And no private school either! I'm traumatised!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/06/2024 10:21

Is he seriously comparing him not having Sky TV as child to people going hungry and not being able to pay their bills and live even a basic standard of living. Is he taking the full on piss.

Could be. Well on MN people say they give up their sky TV, holidays, Costa coffee and blood to send their children to private school. Thing is what works on MN might not be relatable in the real world.

BiggerBoat1 · 12/06/2024 10:24

the80sweregreat · 12/06/2024 10:24

I Don't care which school he went to , the fact he hasn't any working class friends speaks volumes to me. Even the Royals have known a few ordinary people that work for them or they occasionally see around. He was clearly brought up in a bubble of just rich people and helped to do well. It's a shame it's all falling apart now by these gaffs, whoever is advising him needs to be sacked off!

TL;DR is yes.

And now we have another glorious 24 hours of Tory spinbots having to reverse ferret that one whilst - rightly - being torn a new one by both Reform and Labour.

This really is surreal. In a world where the media is their poodle, the Tories have managed to switch every channel to the adverts for the opposition.

We know the Daily Mail run an automated story lifter from MN. Give this story enough threads and they'll pick up without realising.

WestEndWindy · 12/06/2024 10:28

@medianewbie

I'm not aware of anything to preclude that happening but it would be highly unlikely I'd have thought.

I think he'll step down from his seat though when he loses the leadership. If he wins his seat. There's no way he'll sit as a backbencher in a very weak opposition.
