DH has cold sore, baby being born this week

As the title says, DH has a cold sore and baby is arriving via c section this week. He is being born 5 weeks early.

I am worried about the risk of neonatal herpes. Obviously DH won’t be kissing the baby with an active cold sore but I’m wondering if there’s anything else he should be doing. ie using hand sanitizer before touching the baby? Should I avoid kissing him too?

Yes you should avoid kissing him. You can get patches for cold sores to help them stop spreading (stop contamination). He shouldn’t touch his coldsore, and should make sure his hand hygiene is good.

Wash hands before touching the baby or teat of his bottle/dummies and don't share towels etc. You can get cold sore patches to stick over them to stop them spreading so easily. Stops you constantly touching them.

Could he put a patch on it?
He should wash hands before touching the baby. I'd avoid kissing on the lips if that's where it is

I have cold sores and had them when my babies were newborn. Just no kisses and wash hands before picking up baby.

For piece of mind I recommend the Compeed patches (this is an expensive Amazon link)

It will be ok just he needs to not kiss the baby.

Thanks everyone, I will tell him about the patches. It’s on the corner of his mouth beside his beard so unsure if it would stick.

Just to double check should I avoid kissing the baby too? Or will I be ok as I don’t have a cold sore ?
