To wonder what happened to George Michael

I'm a 70s baby so grew up loving Wham and had the posters and everything so I ended up loving George Michael solo career as well. I didn't like his later stuff so much so stopped following him after a while but he seemed like such a creative spirit. What happened? You never about him anymore like you do with Britney or others 80s stars like Kate Bush or Michael Jackson or even Elton John. I think the next generations are missing out on a lot.

I'm quite relieved that this isn't another batshit "I'm furious with Michael Mosley for going and dying" thread tbh.
I mean, it's batshit in its own little way, but y'know. 😳

You were one of the few voices of sanity on that thread @ASighMadeOfStone

I'm furious at GM for being gay and not marrying me!

It wouldn’t have mattered anyway because he’d have married me first!😂😂😂

Freedom video with the glamazon supermodels of the eighties remains a top 5 video for me. Freedom had a little surge on Instagram with high school grads throwing hats or blasting thru doors with cap and gown while freedom plays. I went back and watched the video after hearing on IG and thought yes still a fantastic evolutionary video

No I mean his legacy. The kids have Tiktoks on all the time with all sorts of old artists like Michael Jackson (who is also dead) and Madonna and all that (and she doesn't release anything anymore) but George Michael was so huge and you just do not see him in the modern culture at all which is ridiculous.

There was a huge Wham revival off the back of the documentary not long back.

I don't think his music has aged awfully well though, in honesty.

HRTQueen · 11/06/2024 21:56

There was a lovely documentary about Wham recently it was really about friendship

His music was very good but not ground breaking and has not influenced music in the same way as Elvis, Michael Jackson,
Prince etc

He is played on Magic and Smooth radio

I expect they'll make a film soon - Amy Winehouse/Freddie Mercury/Elton style

My teens know about George Michael and like his music. They fall about with laughter when I tell them that my friends and I all fancied him and we had no clue he was gay.

Haha me too! When I watch the old Wham videos I just think - how did we not realise he was gay?! Me and my sister absolutely loved him ❤️

His career took a dose dive after he was arrested for a public sex offense.

Nonsense and he wasn't identifiably "woke" imo.
When he drove his car into our local Snappy Snaps (under the influence) some wag sprayed "Wham!" Over the hole he made in the wall

HoppingPavlova · 12/06/2024 09:12

He would have been so fab if he was still around now he was like the ultimate woke celebrity before that was even a thing

George Michael. In what way was he woke? He hid in the closet for many years, being outed after committing several sex offences.

Davros · 12/06/2024 18:22

I believe he was scared of his dad so his his gayness
