To wonder what happened to George Michael

I'm a 70s baby so grew up loving Wham and had the posters and everything so I ended up loving George Michael solo career as well. I didn't like his later stuff so much so stopped following him after a while but he seemed like such a creative spirit. What happened? You never about him anymore like you do with Britney or others 80s stars like Kate Bush or Michael Jackson or even Elton John. I think the next generations are missing out on a lot.

No I mean his legacy. The kids have Tiktoks on all the time with all sorts of old artists like Michael Jackson (who is also dead) and Madonna and all that (and she doesn't release anything anymore) but George Michael was so huge and you just do not see him in the modern culture at all which is ridiculous.

Oh 😂 I don't think he is cool enough for tik tok or memes. My first ever concert was Wham I was 13 and was convinced George was just waiting on me to leave school to marry me !

I’ve often thought the same about that Elvis Presley chap, he was quite big in his day. I wonder where he is now? I saw a bloke that looked ever so like him in B&M this morning, I wonder if it’s him?

Saw the same bloke down the chip shop recently 🤣

No I wonder this too op. I thought he was a tragic yet generous individual and wonder how he spent his last day.

People may ridicule you here but I get it.

As his last day was Christmas Day, he probably spent it shovelling down turkey and drinking buckets of wine. I know I did.
After he died, it emerged that he had been finding the Highgate Festival (where he lived) for years. Apparently he donated to and supported many charities anonymously

OP, there are literally LOADS of documentaries on GM, including Netflix's biggest one 'Wham' released this year.

Honestly I would argue, more has been documented on him post death than many other artists.

As others have said:

George Michael, Portrait of an Artist is on Channel 4 and can be streamed

George Michael: Freedom, George Michael: Freedom (The directors cut) and George Michael: Freedom (Uncut) are all on streaming platforms (I recommend the Uncut one)

Wham! on Netflix is great and has commentary from both George and Andrew Ridgley

Last Christmas is a film that uses all his music

A Different Story is his self penned documentary on Apple TV from 2004

I hear his music on the radio all the time OP and I'm pretty sure his music isn't going anywhere

I know what you mean OP and I think it's to do with his profile in the USA and consequently globally. He did very well in that market both with Wham and his early solo work. Then his record company got nasty and he got arrested and the unapologetic way he handled both made the socially conservative airtime honchos in the USA nervous, so he kind of rejected it all, over there.

That makes sense. I thought what he did with Outside was a brilliant response.
Post-Wham 90s George Michael was part of the soundtrack to my teens. Such a voice… And @Mrsjayy he was DEFINITELY cool!

MK19590 · 11/06/2024 14:48

I think maybe what OP means is that even though he's dead there aren't TV documentaries and stuff about him that are relevant today

Didn't George Michael have some allegations against him?

No!

KindleAndCake · 11/06/2024 16:09

Have you not heard of Whamaggedon? There's practically a whole month dedicated to him, well Wham! and that song!

Alllllthemunchies · 11/06/2024 16:11

' Heehee this tickled me' surely? 😁

Took me a minute to work out but that's brilliant! Nicely done 👏😂

SnapdragonToadflax · 11/06/2024 16:13

Are you really suggesting we should be hearing more about a dead man because his music is not played much on TikTok? 😂

If you were truly born in the 70s, I suggest you get off TikTok and exist in the real world for a while. I heard Freedom in Morrison's earlier this week and Heal the Pain on a commercial radio station at the weekend. Last Christmas is played to death every Christmas - in fact I'd say it's more popular now than when I was growing up in the 90s. He's definitely still around. Possibly not that popular with 14 year olds who were children when he died, but TikTok isn't actually the centre of the universe.

Ponderingwindow · 11/06/2024 16:21

His career took a dose dive after he was arrested for a public sex offense.

hummusandchips · 11/06/2024 16:27

He's played on the radio all the time!

Just been on holiday in Spain and the hotel seemed to have Wham! and his solo stuff on a loop.

His music was never my cup of tea but I've come to appreciate him and by all accounts he was a lovely generous soul... he funded a counselling charity I volunteered at and that was the only reason it survived.

His legacy does live on!

ALongHardWinter · 11/06/2024 16:37

Is this a wind up?

DonnaBanana · 11/06/2024 16:41

I'm glad everyone is getting to reminisce about George! Okay it seems like there are some things I should go and check out thanks for those. He would have been so fab if he was still around now he was like the ultimate woke celebrity before that was even a thing.

OP posts:
Moveoverdarlin · 11/06/2024 16:46

Listen to Heart 80s. They play so much Wham! My kids aged 5 and 9 know loads of Wham records.

MadameMassiveSalad · 11/06/2024 16:52

There's a whole wham documentary op

MadameMassiveSalad · 11/06/2024 16:53

It's on Netflix

Needmorelego · 11/06/2024 16:57

@DonnaBanana what do you mean he was "woke"?
He kept his sexuality secret for a large part of his career.
(by the way a song of his has literally just played on Smooth FM)

LlynTegid · 11/06/2024 17:00

Tallisker · 11/06/2024 15:30

Saw the same bloke down the chip shop recently 🤣

RIP Kirsty MacColl, I get the reference.

The OP if they are trying to argue that George Michael's music is not as appreciated as much as some others who died far too young may have a point. Though if it means his memory is not being exploited by others it is not so bad.

SomewhereOverTheHill · 11/06/2024 17:02

I heard a song of his playing on the radio the other day, and did think that’s the first time I’ve heard one of his solo songs in a long while, so I do get what you mean. Obviously he’s dead, but it is a bit like apart from ‘Last Christmas’ his music died with him.

Needmorelego · 11/06/2024 17:29

It's Andrew Ridgeley I never hear about these days. No clue what the chap is up to now.
Shirley is married to Martin Kemp and mother to Roman Kemp - but whether she had/has a career in the music industry I've no idea.
Pepsi - I assume that wasn't her real name - no clue either.
Obviously I can Google them to find out.
George Michael - the one who has passed away - definitely has had more publicity and is more well known.
Despite having died.

mewkins · 11/06/2024 17:41

OP, his memory lives on in this thread if nothing else. I don't TikTok so haven't noticed his absence...he is still very much in my thoughts and on my playlist.

PuppyMonkey · 11/06/2024 17:45

Deecee Lee was in the original line up (Pepsi replaced her) - she went on to marry Paul Weller but no idea where she is now?

OP needs to listen to more Radio 2, his music is played all the time. Or watch BBC4 on a Friday night, TOTP night.Grin
