To wonder what happened to George Michael

I'm a 70s baby so grew up loving Wham and had the posters and everything so I ended up loving George Michael solo career as well. I didn't like his later stuff so much so stopped following him after a while but he seemed like such a creative spirit. What happened? You never about him anymore like you do with Britney or others 80s stars like Kate Bush or Michael Jackson or even Elton John. I think the next generations are missing out on a lot.

It's Andrew Ridgeley I never hear about these days. No clue what the chap is up to now.
Shirley is married to Martin Kemp and mother to Roman Kemp - but whether she had/has a career in the music industry I've no idea.
Pepsi - I assume that wasn't her real name - no clue either.
Obviously I can Google them to find out.
George Michael - the one who has passed away - definitely has had more publicity and is more well known.
Despite having died.

Shirley was on Gardeners's World /Chelsea Flower Show the other week. Her and Martin have a lovely garden.

Andrew Ridgely I think is quite private though he was a big part of the Wham doc - he was lovely about George.

I don’t know if I would describe George as ‘woke’!

Cornflakelover · 11/06/2024 17:57

Christmas isn’t Christmas without last Christmas
& (sorry ) Die Hard

i absolutely loved George Michale’s music
i remember the year he died lots of other famous people died but he was the only one I was upset by his death

i think because George Michale and Wham were a big part of my youth - late teens early twenties and it was like a part of my youth was gone

I’ saw him in concert twice and he was absolutely amazing and I saw Wham

I think his appeal was that he could truly sing and he was liked by both men and women .

he did a huge amount of work for charities and centrepoint in London

and I remember when he was interviewed about the time he spent in prison he jokingly said that the worse bit was the other prisoners singing freedom every morning 😂😂

when his mum died he did a free show for all the staff in the hospital where she was treated

he donated money to a couple who were having IVF ( and they were on This Morning talking about it being there last chance
They only found out when there baby was born and they were sent a letter from GM

I think he was one of those very rare artist who truly appreciated what he was able to do with his wealth and he was also able to laugh at himself and take the piss ( let’s go outside video was brilliant )

The car pool video was also one of my favourite ones

Sadly his sister also died on Christmas Day 3 years later in George’s house that she inherited

I’ve often thought the same about that Elvis Presley chap, he was quite big in his day. I wonder where he is now? I saw a bloke that looked ever so like him in B&M this morning, I wonder if it’s him?

“He was quite big in his day”.

He certainly was. Too young to die, too fat to live.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 11/06/2024 17:59

There was a George Michael tribute night on (I think) BBC4 a few weeks ago. I put it on, it was really good. My husband complained at first but - this is honestly true - by the end, he was admitting he'd vastly underrated George Michael's talent.

I don't think you never hear of him - aside from the above programme, Wham are first to be mentioned in any 80s music retrospective stuff and the Absolute retro radio stations play Wham and George Michael on their standard playlists.

Lillieloola · 11/06/2024 18:01

Absolutely loved George Michael. Regularly watch documentary about him.

RosaMoline · 11/06/2024 18:10

@DonnaBanana

Do you even know what ‘woke’ means? 🙄

GeorgeMichaelWasHere · 11/06/2024 18:16

I’m a massive fan so probably biased but my teens know of him and so do my little nieces and nephews because we sing along to his stuff. I think some of his songs are used on TikToks and I’ve seen them as backing on Instagram videos.

I also just watched one of the documentaries on iPlayer and he’s constantly on Smooth Radio’s FB posts!

He was amazing.

Kangarude · 11/06/2024 18:17

“Woke”? 😂
He had a great voice and was very generous. He did a lot for charity, most of which was only revealed after he died. Sadly missed

Michael Jackson's been very quiet lately as well.

😂

I knew what you meant OP!

tbh I said to my mum lately that for a long time I actually never realised how talented he was, I’d only really heard the more frothy pop songs. Wasn’t until I saw him sing The Grave on Graham Norton’s show that I realised he could really sing.

I remember watching the footage of George rehearsing Somebody to Love for the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

David Bowie is in the background and you can see the respect coming from him.

George's voice is magnificent and this was only a rehearsal! He was a gifted singer.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 11/06/2024 18:35

My son loved George's music when he was 17 / 18, he's 20 now and still listens to him occasionally so I really don't think he's dropped off the radar.

Ponderingwindow · 11/06/2024 16:21

His career took a dose dive after he was arrested for a public sex offense.

Ummm no it did not. ConfusedHmm

Look up the sales for the music that came after that! His response was one of the best pieces of clever marketing ever in pop music.

LeavesOnTrees · 11/06/2024 14:46

It's true he hasn't been on tour recently either.
Being dead is no excuse.

🤣🤣🤣

who does/did he think is/was??

DonnaBanana · 11/06/2024 14:46

No I mean his legacy. The kids have Tiktoks on all the time with all sorts of old artists like Michael Jackson (who is also dead) and Madonna and all that (and she doesn't release anything anymore) but George Michael was so huge and you just do not see him in the modern culture at all which is ridiculous.

Madonna has done big tours recently..

@DonnaBanana

Do you even know what ‘woke’ means? 🙄

He stood up for anti racist causes, spoke out about social inequalities, gay rights, volunteered with the homeless, did free concerts for the NHS, and gave a lot of money to good causes. He was very alert to different types of discrimination and spoke out about it. That is literally what woke is.

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 11/06/2024 18:58

@DonnaBanana yes but he also got arrested for "engaging in a lewd act".
He took drugs and was arrested for dangerous driving while under the influence of drugs and went to prison for that.
I wouldn't say that was very "woke".

Rockschooldropout · 11/06/2024 18:59

My 14 year old loves George Michael .. she’s watched Last Christmas on a loop and cried every time .. I forgot that he wrote some really beautiful heartfelt songs ..I loved Wham as a teen and his come back from the public loo incident was absolute fried gold . There was a recent Netflix documentary.. plus every Christmas .. we try to avoid “Whamageddon”!!

Trixiefirecracker · 11/06/2024 19:35

I just remember that he was always getting arrested, not just for being naughty in public toilets but driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol etc.

Branleuse · 11/06/2024 19:40

Whenever news comes out about George Michael it seems to be stuff like him secretly paying off nurses debts, and nice things.

Given that it wasn't just the sun that went down on him maybe what happened to him brings back his unpalatable hobby... .
See how I got 2 puns in there....?!

I heard your careless whisper
