The flip side of the other thread about the horrors that were acceptable 20/30/40 years ago.
Things that back then we would never believe possible . I'll start
Children carrying knives.
Children murdering each other
Children attacking parents and teachers.
Morbid obesity
The lax attitude towards drugs
The notion that you are not responsible for your own actions. It's always someone else's fault.
Smart phones and social media
The damage that smartphones and social media cause

People pretending that you can change sex or that the word ‘woman’ means ‘someone who likes feminine things’.

'Lax attitude towards drugs'

Don't we take much less drugs as a society than we did in the 90s?

Granted, a lot of countries are legalising weed but I don't think we can really moan about that while alcohol continues to be legal.

Was going to say the same. Just can’t believe “women” now has little meaning because anyone can be one!!

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2024 08:28

My initial thought was taking photos and videos while drink and immediately posting them to the Internet for all of posterity.

LlynTegid · 10/06/2024 08:31

Anti-semitism.

KohlaParasaurus · 10/06/2024 08:33

Being expected to be accessible by 'phone at all times.
Being expected to believe and affirm that humans can change sex.
Fancy false fingernails for everyday wear.

I was thinking more along the lines of the proliferation of weed, the stench of the stuff everywhere and the insistence that it's perfectly harmless and never causes mental health problems

Yet another thread inviting people to be nasty!

MermaidEyes · 10/06/2024 09:07

To be fair, children have been murdering each other for many decades now. Not a new thing. Plenty of famous cases out there.

NCfor24 · 10/06/2024 09:13

I'm sad that it's the norm for me to have to pay for childcare for school holidays because

  1. I have to work, being a sahm is not remotely financially viable, and
  2. The kids won't/can't play out

When I was young we disappeared all day during the 6 weeks holiday and had mini adventures with our friends...my kids don't want to, I also don't want them to for safety.

Jadedbuthappy82 · 10/06/2024 09:16

For me one of the saddest ones is children not playing out and having that freedom we had in the 80s, an how that has a kind of suffocating impact on the mum to occupy/entertain them in a way that our mum's never felt pressured to.

What is it that you find nasty?

3DayStockpiler · 10/06/2024 09:20

A packet of crisps costing upwards of a pound.
Not being able to give my child cash to go and get an ice cream because they don't take cash.

Trying to think of positives...I love my satnav and also the way it reroutes me to avoid problems on the road.
Podcasts
Regular seaswimming/openwater groups.
Heated car seats
The way we're more knowledgeable about layering to withstand the weather and the way that's more affordable, not just something that a hiking enthusiast would save hard for.
The proliferation of water based activity and the way are rivers and lakes have become accessible like never before because of these.

MargaretThursday · 10/06/2024 09:25

I'd say the expectation both parents working and children in childcare both from a young age, and in the holidays.

And foreign holidays becoming the norm. Growing up I knew one family who sometimes went to Spain. Now most I know go abroad to a point that UK holidays are very much looked down on.

RenoDakota · 10/06/2024 09:27

Working from home. I am long past my days of having an office based job but this would have been absolute heaven to me.

EatCrow · 10/06/2024 09:31

The fact that 19 degrees constitutes a heatwave in the middle of June that englanders are allegedly basking in. (I know this is yet another piece of gaslighting bull crap that passes for journalism but…).

I’d like the answer to that too.

EatCrow · 10/06/2024 09:33

Selfies and the celebration of narcissism via social media.

Jeezitneverends · 10/06/2024 09:35

People on decent incomes having to choose between heating and eating

Possibly the OP about how awful people are nowadays with their refusal to take responsibility for themselves and their terrible knife-wielding children? Does seem to me like an invitation to slag off younger generations and modern ways.

Kit543 · 10/06/2024 09:41

Things are certainly less relaxed than they were year’s ago, it’s no wonder there are so many mental health issues when people are constantly walking around on egg shells and perfection is expected in every sphere of life from academic achievement to work, relationships, parenting etc. Things honestly didn’t used to be like this

So you think carrying knives and stabbing people is acceptable?

Yes I agree with this. There's a part of town where no-one dare park because the margin for error in ticket buying and a substantial fine is huge.
Everything is very computer says no and there doesn't seem to be much common sense kindness when an obvious mistake is made.

3DayStockpiler · 10/06/2024 09:52

Did we used to call punishments in school sanctions? Or did schools start copying the language of the benefit system?

JaninaDuszejko · 10/06/2024 09:57

Men in women's prisons. Elizabeth Fry campaigned for sex segregated prisons 200 years ago, I find it shocking that we have to do the same thing again now.
