Things you would never believe would become the norm

The flip side of the other thread about the horrors that were acceptable 20/30/40 years ago.
Things that back then we would never believe possible . I'll start
Children carrying knives.
Children murdering each other
Children attacking parents and teachers.
Morbid obesity
The lax attitude towards drugs
The notion that you are not responsible for your own actions. It's always someone else's fault.
Smart phones and social media
The damage that smartphones and social media cause

I'd say working from home. Best thing to ever become popular!

How about the proliferation of tattoos and body piercings. We would never have thought they'd become so common place back in the 80s.

Yes I have to say I'm not a fan, although each to their own, of course. I think some people will come to regret having tattooed much of their skin, in years to come

Colourful hair like pink and green being pretty commonplace. Used to be just alternatives types, punks etc. I love it, and I’ve had various rainbow hair for 20 years. Long may it continue 😎

StarlightLady · 10/06/2024 16:10

Lighthearted but true. Trousers that come up to your bra.

salsmum · 10/06/2024 16:51

Pubs turning into churches,
Kids not offering their seats to the elderly on buses etc... so many people using drugs,
The elderly not being respected.
Electric vehicles.

Aintnosupermum · 10/06/2024 17:48

Mary Whitehouse. Never thought I’d end up admitting she was right. We all laughed when we should have listened.

HRTQueen · 10/06/2024 17:57

its not the norm or acceptable for children to be murdering or carrying knives 🙄or attacking their parents or teachers. I live in a high crime area I have yet to meet anyone who is fine with any of this its utter nonsense

I will agree with a man putting on a dress and some will accept he is a woman is utterly ridiculous. Thankfully most will see this to be absolute nonsense.

itsmabeline · 10/06/2024 18:17

The Good:

  • Any question you think of or wonder about being answerable just by looking it up on your phone that is always in your pocket
  • working from home being commonplace
  • smoking being banned in public, in clubs and bars. You can go out for a night out without having to put up with lung damage as a normal result and your hair stinking of cigarette smoke

The Bad:

  • People cancelling at the last minute because they know they can access you by phone to tell you. When cancelling at the last minute used to mean leaving someone standing at the station waiting for 40 minutes wondering, people didn't used to do it so casually because they're "tired" or "something came up". That something would uncome up as a matter of basic courtesy and caring about your friends' time
  • teenagers and young adults can't relax and make mistakes like getting very drunk at parties or having the wrong opinion because someone might film it and bring it up ten years later with video evidence

The over inflation of words. So very many examples sadly but here are a few:

Infant school children are now 'students'

Anyone in a non manual role is a 'professional'

One is no longer anticipating or enjoying something but 'excited' by it

  1. M&S selling thongs. I’m not being judgey here, l wear them myself fairly regularly.
  2. Being able to book a flight without leaving your home.
asbestosmouth24 · 10/06/2024 18:52

Anal sex becoming the norm and the younger generation thinking it's just part of the normal routine of sex. Also strangling during sex. The damage porn has done.

According to all my maths and English teachers ithe90s, having a calculator and dictionary in my pocket all the time!

Fathers taking time off work when dc are ill. My dad went to work, as did all my friends. If we were ill, our mums were the only ones who were expected to sort everything out.

Some things are definitely better.

I still do think in the majority of families mum is still the one who has to sort everything out. it certainly seems that way in all the families I know. Mum does all the life admin and organisation for everyone.

It's definitely not perfect. But there are always fathers at drop off and pick up, assemblies and sports days. Dh has left work when a dc has been ill rather than me doing everyone. It isn't 50/50 at all but I think more men understand it's part of having children, unlike 30-40 years ago when I was small.

Inept Prime Ministers.

Or just "Prime Ministers".

When I was a lad, we had to make these last ten years or more!

Trying to bring some lightheartedness here. So my parents generation would find it hard to believe that we buy water 💧 and lug it around in huge cup containers incase we get thirsty on the commute home from work.

I was going to say the exact same thing. When we were children we would knock on peoples doors for a cup of water when we were out playing.

Not having a local bobby whose name you knew.

IrnBruLolly · 10/06/2024 20:47

Being terrified to answer the front door. 🤣

EraOfTheGrey · 10/06/2024 20:49

Parents driving their children to school. Hundreds of cars outside schools at start and end of day.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 10/06/2024 21:03

Babies in buggies staring at a phone.

Kids staring at a phone or iPad in a restaurant or shop
Adults staring at a screen in a restaurant
Adults walking down the street staring at a screen
Drivers staring at a screen while driving

Being a bit worried about something is now 'being terrified' or else you have anxiety which means you don't have to do whatever it is that you are worrying about.
Lying is 'gaslighting'

Yes, I agree, and also Enoch Powell. Both were spot on with what they said. Unfortunately, both suffered others misquoting and misinterpreting them!

I don't think it's being "terrified", it's more of not wanting to be randomly disturbed, often for trivial and unimportant matters.

Enoch Powell and Mary Whitehouse caused not solved many problems. Powell was a racist and Whitehouse was anti women. In spite of being a woman herself.
