If you had a health scare and a bit of a lifestyle ‘wake up call’ how did it happen and how did people help?

Basically MIL has had a health scare (she’s 56) with a suspected TIA/mini stroke. She’s been started on medication for her very high blood pressure and cholesterol but no none in the hospital or clinics seem to have addressed the massive elephant in the room- she is morbidly obese and lives an almost sedentary lifestyle, eats huge portions of unhealthy food and needs to make massive changes. One nurse talked about walking more and gave her a leaflet on health lifestyle but I thought someone would give her a bit of a kick up the bum (I’m a HCP myself!).

It doesn’t feel my place but I really want to speak to her about taking some control and losing weight, exercising more etc. she’s very ‘I’ll take the pills and that will sort it’- obviously they will help but ideally alongside massive lifestyle changes. DH hates discussing his moms weight and no one else would address it but I don’t want to shame her or be critical. If you’ve been in this situation how can I help and be supportive? I don’t want to be buying her gym kit and healthy cookbooks if that will upset her but I also don’t want to stay silent and watch her health deteriorate when she’s so young and we want her around for longer!!
