Car advice - for a 17 yo but also for me

We need to get a car for my 17 yo to practise on, but also for me to use as my existing car is elderly but I’d like to hang on to it for practical reasons (towing etc). I’ve been told that VW golfs are a good option, with a small, probably 1L engine for insurance reasons. I’m very relaxed about driving a low powered car so that isn’t an issue and my DH is keen on something that is fairly sturdy/safe so it ticks that box as well.

Any thoughts on this (and how much mileage would be too much??) - am very inexpert on cars 😊

When I was looking for a car in a low insurance group I used autotrader. It tells you what group it's in and sometimes the engine doesn't matter, I remember a Golf being in a higher insurance group to a Citroen C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo which all have 1litre engines.

If you need it for towing you wont be looking at a 1L car.

My DF bought a 22 month old Kia Rio for the DDs to learn in back in 2016. We still own it - it's a lovely car to drive and will take 5 of us to the pub & back - not sure I'd want to go a lot further but I almost always end up in the back! I think it's a 1.2 petrol engine but DD was stunned by how much better the spec was on the Kia compared to her friend's Polo.
