Things that you can’t quite believe were the norm

What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

There's often a real lack of critical thinking or empathy on MN. If it didn't happen to you, or the people you went to school with, then it definitely didn't happen.

There's got to be a critical mass of people saying, 'Yes, same at my school', or are we all just trolls?

My school in the 80s and 90s, yes open showers and yes (female) teachers watching us to check. In fact, a male teacher came into the changing rooms once and I was the one to get a bollocking, for asking him to wait until we were dressed (I 'hurt his feelings'). This was 1993.

We had the running though the shower being watched by female PE teacher naked first two years of secondary then the practise stopped for everyone- that was early 90s.

No idea why just did - and the row of two lanes of showers separated by a lane between you had to walk/run round in circle just sat there unused for rest time I was at secondary.

So my younger sister - 4 years behind me who went to the same secondary I went to still in 90s never went though it.

In the 1970s it was the norm to:

Keep another person's child safe from harm without being criticized

Consider other people in your community apart from yourself

Doing everything to avoid waste, especially food waste

Be polite and helpful to school and school teachers

I could go on...

I agree that all those things have gone dramatically downhill and need re-booting, but I wonder if gay people, non-white people, disabled people and single mothers miss much from society of the 70s.

Serrina · 10/06/2024 12:47

Blaming gay men for the AIDS epidemic. Shameful.

CwmYoy · 10/06/2024 12:49

debunking.

The Sun, published a “Charlotte Church Countdown Clock”. It didn’t happen but the allegation that it did is an interesting commentary on how the tabloid press is regarded by those who believe themselves to be above such matters.

As background, for those that don’t know, Charlotte Church is a singer and she’s been a famous one since her childhood. In giving evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into the press she stated:

When Charlotte Church gave evidence at the Leveson inquiry into press standards in November she described her anger at a clock on the Sun newspaper’s website that counted down to her 16th birthday, marking the moment she would be over the age of consent.

The thing is, that memory is false. These things happen with memory, of course, but the newspaper, the website, The Sun, News International, did not in fact do this.

What actually happened was that a prankster set up such a site on the internet and then that various newspapers reported on this fact.

At my school (in the 80s) the shower rule was probably only enforced 50% of the time and was a bit of a farce and more like a car wash - involving running the length of the showers (both sides) wearing a towel usually with underwear on.

You ended up with damp hair and a damp towel but with the real danger being slipping over and hurting yourself whilst running the shower gauntlet.

It was completely pointless which is why I think it was only partly enforced.

Fake grass. I do really wonder why this has not been banned. A neighbour of mine in FB has just posted a picture of her perfect plastic lawn. The before and after shots were really quite upsetting, beautiful wild garden full of flowers and trees to perfectly flat lawn, not one thing left standing.

Virgo1958 · 10/06/2024 12:53

Used to cane (just boys) at my school on the stage in front of the whole school.

Allowing pre-pubescent children to change their gender.

It's actually shocking how normalised that awful fake grass had become. It's really bad for the environment too, we've had a decline in bees over the last few years due to it. People don't seem to realise how serious that is either. When I moved into my house 18 months ago, the person who was here before had put some of that nasty fake stuff in the back garden. I ripped it all up, and decided to plant real grass and flowers in its place. People can't seem to understand why I would do such a thing, yes it's more work but I much prefer it.

I went alone or with a friend from about 9/10.

Kids here still do that. They’re allowed (by the pool) to go from 8 without an adult, but 10 seems to be the age parents are comfortable with.

They play out here as well. One of mine tried the “hi mum, I’m home, tired and going to bed” dart upstairs yesterday because he’d got a bollocking from a neighbour and knew I’d be adding to that. It very much reminded me of my childhood as my Nana never let me quickly no upstairs to bed to avoid a row either 😂

Where is it that they’re still allowed?

Jaxhog · 10/06/2024 13:08

Smoking in public
Vaping in public
long distance plane travel (sadly)
Chain high street shops (I hope)
business book writing (it'll all be done by AI)
Marriage for life (sadly)

That's very true. But people have become very selfish indeed.

Dreamingaloud · 10/06/2024 13:11

Fake grass should be illegal.

Rewis · 10/06/2024 13:12

Paparazzi.

Livingtothefull · 10/06/2024 13:13

Fast fashion, with its key role in the toxic system of overproduction - and all to maximise profits for the few.

The whole cycle is madness, utterly destructive at every level: from persuading people to buy cheap rubbish which falls apart after a few wears, made by exploited (mostly female) workers. The destruction to the environment - the manufacturing processes which make the industry one of the world's biggest polluters. Not to mention the dumping of vast amounts of discarded clothes waste, some of the dumping grounds are so vast they can be seen from space.

Wages...

Earning £120 per week, take home, from a bar job. Plus tips/drinks bought.
My rent for a flat share with a friend was £25 a week, bills and food were about £10.
Going out was £20 max, including cigarettes, bus/taxi/food.
We were loaded, relatively speaking...

£120 pw....luxury ! I earned £71 working full time in a busy pub , Fleet St when the newspapers were based there. Nobody except the odd stray American tourist ever tipped btw. People would buy you drinks you couldn't enjoy. Good grub though and my rent was cheap back then.

People born as men competing in sports against women.

Jaxhog · 10/06/2024 13:14

I suspect the BBC (as we know it) will be gone soon too, as we'll all have switched to TV on demand.

Aladdinzane · 10/06/2024 13:16

Ditto on the young teens having boyfriends old enough to drive.

My school had lots of kids that came from pit villages, some of the men picking up girls were in their mid 20s.

As a beekeeper, I agree entirely. My heart breaks a little more with every neighbour that puts this stuff down.

Outwiththenorm · 10/06/2024 13:19

1993 we had a playground supervisor employed who would stand and chainsmoke throughout. We’d stand behind him and fake cough 😆

1994 and our high school finally agreed to stop forcing girls to wear obscene gym knickers for gymnastics etc.

Edited

Oh yes, I just don't get it. Boys wore shorts but girls had to wear knickers or a leotard! Saying that, girls got to wear those gingham summer dresses 😂

When I was in primary school we had 3 big tables to sit at. Group 1 was where the children who were preforming the best in tests sat, group 2 were the children who were preforming ok sat and group 3 was where the kids who struggled sat. Sometimes a child would do well in a test and would move up a table and the teacher would make a big deal and people would clap. It was a disgrace looking back at it. Thank goodness that sort of thing doesn’t go on anymore. We were also made to stand in the corner with back facing the wall when acting up in class. I don’t think that did me any harm but I know that practice isn’t allowed anymore either.

My primary wasn't quite as obvious the groups were colours Green, Blue, Yellow, Red I think they were in that order.

But still I figured it out at 5 which order they were in based on what booms they had.

P3 The Lions 🦁 reading group was a step in front of the Tigers 🐅

Where is it that they’re still allowed?

The rules at our local pool are the same. Allowed to swim unaccompanied from 8 yo. Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.
