How can I stop being depressed about the weather?

Yes yes I know another weather thread. And yes, I realise this sounds insane but I can't handle the weather in this country anymore. I'm an immigrant, have lived here for over a decade but it's increasingly getting to me. Always struggled with the winters but now it's affecting me year round. The grey and rain doesn't seem to end. Please don't tell me that it's better than 40 degrees and boiling hot. I'm not asking for that either! Just dry and a blue sky, that's all I want. Doesn't have to be warm. It is making me depressed and knowing I have to live like this for the rest of my life (or at least until the kids are grown up) is sending me into panic. There are times where I think through scenarios of what would be worse, leaving the country without my husband and children or killing myself. I check the weather back home or see pictures of my family in the garden and burst into tears.

I have tried the lamp, vitamin D supplements, antidepressants, a gratitude journal to value what I do have. Nothing works and every year it is getting worse. Has anyone found a solution? Learned to live with it? I'm looking out the window right now and it's making me feel so sick and hopeless.

I grew up in a very hot country and I don’t miss it, the cool summers here are so enjoyable. My family are currently roasting in 38 degrees and I am glad not to be there!

Retiredearly61 · 09/06/2024 20:25

I think there has been poor weather in a few places. Anecdotally it’s been cloudy in lanzarote for the last fortnight and my friend has just said it’s forecast rain on the costa dorada. I think if I’d paid to escape the uk weather and still didn’t get sunshine I’d be really fed up

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2024 20:27

I welcome immigrants with open arms.

But - mate - this is the UK. What did you expect?

Honestly, in 10 years when climate change has really taken hold you’ll be thankful.

I do not live in the UK and where I am is sunny and warm most days this time of year. Maybe I am romanticizing but I envy all of you. I am fair skinned and my eyes are quite sensitive to the sun. I feel like I can’t leave the house without a big hat and long sleeves and sunscreen. And when I’m driving the sun hurts my eyes, even with sunglasses. I love cloudy, cool days. Maybe persistent rain would get annoying but overall I’d trade if I could!

What temperature are your enjoyable, cloudy cool days? And how many of those days do you have at a time?

Thankful for what? Preemptively thankful?

TheaBrandt · 09/06/2024 20:41

This is climate change for us though isn’t it? Cold and wet. It’s over 50 in Delhi

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2024 20:44

Thankful that it’s probably not going to be as unbearably hot in the UK as it will be in many other parts of the world.

Mirandasbiggestfan · 09/06/2024 20:49

Where are you in the UK OP & where is your home country (roughly)? I’m in London & it can be unbearable here during the summer. I’ve actually been relieved that it hasn’t been too hot so far. But the Southeast is always warmer. We have had a lot of rain which doesn’t bother me but I get that it can be a bit depressing.

MidnightPatrol · 09/06/2024 20:51

I feel you OP.

I think we have had two days of ‘shorts weather’.

I’m pretty good at going out in the cold and rain, but we have had nine months of that!

I want a relaxed afternoon in the park, without getting blown away / sudden downpour.

Edenmum2 · 09/06/2024 20:52

Where are you? We've had a glorious day on the south coast

Well, no chance of that! And I’m not in the least bit thankful.

Squirrelsnut · 09/06/2024 20:56

I'm puzzled by the 'last summer was shit' comments. It was absolutely roasting, unbearably hot on some days, wasn't it?

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 09/06/2024 21:05

YANBU. I’m not a sun worshipper, I actually don’t care what the temperature is I just want some fucking light. Blue sky, sun out. It can be snowing or 30 degrees, I don’t care, just not this endless grey cloud and fucking rain.

I have 2 small children and a dog and the weather is the difference between a good day and a bad day for us. They don’t want to do yet more fucking arts and crafts, they’re going stir crazy playing with the same old toys in the same 2 rooms but equally a ‘bracing walk’ in the rain means bundling everyone into waterproofs (one will no doubt need the toilet the moment I’ve done this), heading out only for DD to rightly moan that she hates getting wet and cold, before coming home and having to strip everyone off, hang the clothes up, clean the pram wheels (the pram lives in the hallway), clean the dog’s paws, air my own clothes out and put the heating on so all the wet gear doesn’t cause damp.

It’s fucking miserable and anyone who says otherwise is either amphibious or hates people

If I was to suggest there is no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing, will it make you feel better? Or, what about me mentioning that (practically mythical) day when we had snow in June, does that ease your burden?

coxesorangepippin · 09/06/2024 21:14

God it really is bad isn't it

We're back in the UK this summer and all I hear is how awful the weather is

ShiftySquirrel · 09/06/2024 21:26

Last summer was definitely shit. There were odd sunny days, but they were all pretty changeable, blustery, downpours etc.

I spent three weeks in a tent - well three tents as they succumbed one after the other. We're seasoned campers with decent equipment too. On the last day we bought a caravan.

I've probably jinxed the next few weeks too, I bought a sun hat.

Friendshipover5 · 09/06/2024 21:34

I feel the same. I love gardening but I’ve only managed a week of it so far this year. All my favourite roses are flowering and being blown away in the wind, weather isn’t nice enough to be outside to even appreciate them. At 10AM today it was 14 degrees in my house so I put the heating on. Nowt but rain and grey skies all week.

iutiut · 09/06/2024 21:40

I hear you OP I feel the same! Moved here from a very sunny country and realised sunshine is such a luxury here. Its grey and wet and never ending, so depressing.

People keep saying just put on waterproof clothing and enjoy the outdoors. No I hate it, trying to have a picnic in the cold wind is just not enjoyable at all! Maybe it is ok for people who grow up here and never lived in countries with better climate.

I looked at the forecast for next week, guess what, its colder than the city I moved from, but that city is in the middle of winter😱

Stringagal · 09/06/2024 21:40

I feel the same, it’s depressingly boring weather and impossible to make outdoor plans. I hate winter but we didn’t even have proper snow… so it feels like it’s just been grey and damp since October with a very occasional warm and sunny day thrown in. Pathetic.

Fairyliz · 09/06/2024 21:49

You have my sympathy op I feel exactly the same and I was born here 60+ years ago.
It’s not the heat I yearn for, just some sunshine and a blue sky.
The endless grey skies are just so depressing, it’s hard to do anything at all.

olivehater · 09/06/2024 21:52

I am a hot weather lover. Born in a hot country. I also have a husband who won’t fly to make things worse. I just like to be outside in my garden sitting. That is what bothers me the most, that it is rarely warm enough to just sit outside.
Ways I deal with it. I am getting a pagoda in my garden an all weather outdoor seats and a big blanket box. Hopefully can sit outside more even in the rain.
Lots of walks. There is a reason we are big walkers in the UK. It’s because you have to be moving to enjoy being outdoors.
We have a local cricket club that we do go to and sit outside at in all weathers because we need to watch the kids in the playground/football field. We wrap up and stay for a good few hours. A couple of beers help. Only the rain stops us really. I always feel better for being outside with friends even if I am cold and this kids get a good run around. Can you find somewhere like that to frequent?

No it will make me wish for even worse weather in which a tornado picks you up and transports you to Oz tbh

Yeah, it makes me feel like that when the same idiots come on every time and say those things.

hattie43 · 09/06/2024 22:01

I'm totally sick of this weather aswell . Not exactly flaming June is it .

Bloom15 · 09/06/2024 22:04

I am from the UK and absolutely hating this year so far. I'm in Liverpool and it has rained almost every day so far. It's been so cold today too.

We went to Spain in May and my asthma was great. Back home and in the damp and already had a trip to a and e and steroids
