Just Service and Pre - Booked Holiday

Hi all,

The title should say Jury Service not Just! I couldn’t work out how to edit the thread title!

I received a letter today from the Courts service stating I’ve been selected for Jury Service in August.

But I’ve got a pre booked holiday that same week, well jury service starts on the Monday but I’m away that Friday . It says to allow two weeks but sometimes longer.

The letter gives you the option to say you would like to change the date of jury service, but doesn’t give you a box to say why you can’t unless you can’t do it for the next 12 months.

It gives you the option to select three alternatives dates when you can do jury service over the next 12 months- but wouldn’t it be easier to say when you can’t do it rather than when you can?!

Will I likely be selected again , or is it completely random? You can only be excused once the forms say.

I think they’d expect people to be on holiday in August?

They probably get more referrals for holiday in august, but they can't just shut down jury trials for a whole month because some people will have a holiday.

I suppose they ask you to give specific dates that you can do to make you more accountable for it maybe?

I understand the justice system doesn’t shut down because it’s the school holidays, I just meant they are probably used to people asking to be deferred more in August than any other time of year.

I only got the letter today. It wouldn’t be a problem usually, but the holiday is pre booked ( last year ).

What happened? My wife has just had a letter - I've not opened it (she's at work) so I don't know when the dates are. Our problem is that she has to call in to check on her mum on the way back from work - just to make sure she is up and dressed, has had her medication, has had something to eat and is OK - she's 93, registered blind, now deaf, insists on living on her own and has a dementia diagnosis - she's declined in recent months and probably in the final stretch now.
