Leave the troll threads up! Yay or nay?

I was entertained last night by reading a seemingly obvious troll thread from the person who claimed their friend was in 'a comma' after an accident and was outraged her unconscious friend's bank wouldn't allow them access to her bank account. The story got more outlandish as it went on and had more holes than a sieve.

I think some kind and trusting people were taking it seriously but it was becoming clear that it was a total wind up. Personally I find these threads really funny and entertaining particularly as the troll gets more and more ridiculous, however I know it's only a matter of time before it gets deleted. Blah...fun over!

Wouldn't it be better to lock troll threads with a note added to say it's a previously banned poster etc, rather than just delete them? Maybe it's my weird sense of humour but I find them amusing.

Nay, they're too goady

WheelofCheeses · 08/06/2024 10:46

The entertaining ones should be left, some are nuts and amusing.

Was I the only one thinking FFS it’s ‘coma’. 😄

GentlemanJohnny · 08/06/2024 11:21

Keep 'em. In these times we need all the laughs we can get.

SpringerFall · 08/06/2024 11:25

They are obvioud but we are not allowed to mention it so I just go along with it, I do feel for people who overinvest and post essays

Singleandproud · 08/06/2024 11:27

Yes, I'd like a banner along the top that said Troll - with a little troll emoji apart from the weird sex, teen son masturbation or wee and poo trolls - no one needs to be feeding anyone's fetish

Similarly with zombie threads, nice little zombie banner and a zombie emojis along the top of the post. I know there's a warning before you restart a zombie threads but then it's down to the next poster to recognize the OP post date and it happens so often now with the 'similar threads' section at the bottom.

Or perhaps those are the features you get if you pay for MN.

Gingernaut · 08/06/2024 11:27

Nay

Many of the trolls take screenshots of their handiwork and repost them on Reddit or chat rooms as 'proof' of Mumsnet's ableism/transphobia/homophobia/racism/Islamophobia

The sooner they're taken down the better

CollaterlieSistersSister · 08/06/2024 11:29

Bring back Rainy Puddles!

BertieBotts · 08/06/2024 11:31

No because some very kind gullible posters invariably think "But what if MNHQ are wrong?" and will PM the troll offering to send money etc. It's exploitative.

Don't feed them.

Do enjoy it when you briefly catch one before it goes poof Grin

Yep, I agree. Obvious fetish or harmful ones need to be deleted as someone is likely getting their rocks off to those. But I'm in favour of keeping the silly wind up ones as people might read them and it might help them to be less gullible in the future. Could even have a board, 'Troll graveyard'. 😂

@WheelofCheeses

I know!! 😂 I was waiting for the OP to announce that their poor unconscious friend had (miracle upon miracle) suddenly woken up!

The troll graveyard is brilliant - it could live alongside Classics and I'm sure most of them started as wind ups. Ive wasted an awful lot of time on rainy afternoons waiting for the guy who parked in front of someone's gates in his 4*4 to return, and the OP who went out with the crows, and the Korean grandma shed debacle -

tuvamoodyson · 08/06/2024 12:30

I don’t find them funny at all….

Do you think the reddit people are posting here to be trolls?

I thought they were troll- hunting as its banned here?

EdithWeston · 08/06/2024 18:56

Of course not.

I don't want to encourage more trolling.

Good spoof threads don't always get reported, and there are definitely some that survive. Stupid trolly ones have no place here. And leaving them up would be a green light for yet more.

MN has enough invented bollocks without rolling out a "welcome" mat

Hotnamehere · 08/06/2024 19:00

A troll graveyard section would just encourage more trolls.

Different subreddits, I imagine! I've also seen this happening on X/Twitter.

BobnLen · 09/06/2024 08:21

Most of them seem to be left up anyway

HowWasTheEnd · 09/06/2024 08:53

No but there are plenty left up. Look in classics for them.
