In Edinburgh this weekend for Taylor and it's been full of homeless people, so they've obviously not done a very good job 🙄

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 08/06/2024 00:19

It would be really helpful if you could provide a link OP

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 08/06/2024 00:27

Ok I’ve found it.

The headline is completely disingenuous.

Whats happened is:

  • Shelter Scotland offer to put homeless people in hotels, hostels and B&B’s. This is temporary accommodation until they can find something permanent. Sometimes it means a homeless person is going each day to new accommodation but it’s the only alternative to being on the streets.
  • Because of the concert, everything is booked up to the eyeballs, meaning that Shelter et al can’t make bookings because tourists have already booked them up
  • Its better to put them in a hotel far away for a few nights rather than have them back on the streets
  • Nobody is kicking homeless people out of a hotel room they already booked to make way for ‘Swifties’.
  • There is no evidence of homeless people being removed from accommodation where they are already staying

It’s a non story really. Unless you think that people who’ve booked tickets for the concert should be booted out the room they’ve booked fair and square?

What Shelter would like is exclusive booking rights to accommodation, it would certainly make their life easier. But at the same time accommodations have no obligation to give them that.

But shame on Shelter, The BBC and also people not understand the article properly to blame a totally blameless woman. it’s so fucking depressing that an American woman is being peddled as kicking homeless people out their city in Scotland 🙄

Taylor Swift

Homeless sent out of Edinburgh to make room for Taylor Swift fans - BBC News

A number of homeless people have been sent out of Edinburgh to make way for tourists ahead of the Eras tour dates.

It’s absolute rubbish. If anyone presents as homeless they are providing accommodation a little bit further out of the city. They are not kicking anyone out of an accommodation they are already in. I’ve seen a few reports on this during the last few weeks and I read a statement Edinburgh Council made on it somewhere.

We’re in Edinburgh as we have tickets for 2 of the nights and there’s a lot of homeless individuals who people are donating to, either by giving money or providing food.

Edited as I found this in the article.

Edinburgh City Council said it was “absolutely not” moving tenants out of temporary accommodation to make way for Taylor Swift fans but added that it may struggle to get rooms booked due to demand. Its housing convenor Councillor Jane Meagher, said: “It is a symptom of the housing emergency we face in Edinburgh that at times we must use tourist accommodation to house homeless households.
“We know it won’t be available year-round, particularly over the busy summer months, so we use it reluctantly as a last resort.
“We’re aware of the situation and are working with the affected households to find appropriate, alternative accommodation.”

Stop scaremongering @slimshady18 and aid hardly call her a mediocre singer since she’s on a a 152 worldwide stadium tour.

BuntyMcHooves · 08/06/2024 00:39

This is a thing. The homeless get issued exclusion orders when there’s any big event in Cambridge - even regular ones like graduations and May Balls. I would think this is what’s happened in Edinburgh.

TheFireflies · 08/06/2024 00:41

Surely this happens every time the Edinburgh Festival is on, then

Jellycatspyjamas · 08/06/2024 07:48

You'd be wrong, there’s no short notice hotel accommodation in the city centre so homeless people can’t be booked in. Anyone already in hotel accommodation isn’t being moved out nor are people being moved on from the streets.

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 08/06/2024 09:28

I’m actually quite appalled at the bitchiness of the OP. Nothing to do with Taylor Swift, everything to do with the fact that tourist accommodation was probably booked up yonks ago whenever her tour was announced, therefore Shelter/the council booking short term accommodation for homeless people need to find availability elsewhere

I hope you are acknowledging how wrong you were to blame TS OP?

BMW6 · 08/06/2024 09:41

I should think OP is far too embarrassed to come back here!

You clearly haven’t actually read it.

mitogoshi · 08/06/2024 09:55

I also echo it's the same when the fringe is on, summer more generally. Edinburgh gets very booked in summer so those requiring short term emergency housing will be placed where they can get rooms, potentially a distance away. In London this is the case anyway, with people being offered accommodation in the midlands.

Misthios · 08/06/2024 10:01

Yeah it's not true, just political spin.

Just that the temporary hotels/hostels which are sometimes used for emergency accommodation are not available as they are full.

Taylor Swift's concerts are bringing thousands of people into the city, all of whom are spending money on eating, drinking, accommodation. This sort of event is brilliant for Scotland.

slimshady18 · 08/06/2024 10:01

Sorry I've just woken up- no need to harp on and on. I was just merely surprised at the news article, and didn't do a ton of research behind it because I have been quite busy, that's my bad so I do apologise for that, and I appreciate you guys letting me know what's actually going on!

But for you people that are just arse licking TS at any opportunity, get a life? I didn't read enough into it as I should have, and I can only apologise, but no need to hold me at the stake jesus christ😂

OP posts:
Forgetaboutme · 08/06/2024 10:08

But if you didn't read into it you really shouldn't have started a topic slating TS. Btw I'm not a TS fan, i just hate it when people give opinions on stuff they haven't even bothered reading properly.

But even reading the BBC news article, it's clear that the headline is misleading? No extensive research required.

Not sure what TS's singing capability or otherwise has to do with it

How can you be surprised at a news article you didn’t bother to read?

Misthios · 08/06/2024 10:37

How is pointing out that the article is fundamentally wrong "arse-licking" Taylor Swift?

People don't like having it pointed out that they have posted a pile of nonsense without actually reading what they are frothing about, do they?

slimshady18 · 08/06/2024 10:38

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece I presume you have never gotten anything wrong? Or mixed up? Or misread anything? For such a perfect person you are presenting yourself as, you sound awfully full of anger. I made a mistake, for which the rest of Mumsnet apparently can't relate to, my bad.

Or read it at all apparently.

I presume you have never gotten anything wrong? Or mixed up?

I frequently get things wrong. But if I'm bothered enough about a story to start a thread about it, I double check.

TinkerTiger · 08/06/2024 10:42

It would have taken less time to research it than to make a post in an attempt to pontificate.

Good for you! I appreciate that I didn't find out enough, I skim read the article and posted something about it before fully understanding. I have owned that and previously apologised.

Nobody is harping on. You posted something very bitchy and accusatory without even reading the facts properly and people are correcting you.

Im not sure Correctly saying that a woman isn’t to blame for something quite serious is ‘arse licking’. But I do think this is a lesson in perhaps basic fact checking OP before posting a very bitchy post.

If you just want to slag Taylor Swift off then start a post slagging her off. Far better and more honest than what you’ve done with this post.

Personally I get things wrong but I don’t then insult the person who pointed out it was wrong then whine that I’m the victim

slimshady18 · 08/06/2024 10:58

@ItsNotAShopItsAStore I actually feel a bit bad for you for feeling the need to just continuously accuse someone (me) of being bitchy when they (me) apologised for being wrong. Yeah I was wrong, I said that and apologised for it, I haven't said I'm the victim, I thanked the people that educated me (which was you btw!!!!)? Get a life I can't imagine how tiring it must be being you
