Steam cleaning rug

I'm using a steam cleaner for the first time and wondering if it isn't cleaning my deep pile rug properly. It's just the material isn't hot when I touch it straight after and I don't know how to tell. Does anyone know about this ? My cat has had worms so feeling like everything is contaminated and thinking about throwing out the rugs. Or maybe there's a pesticide I can use that won't harm pets ?

My steam cleaner hisses and a little bit of steam comes off when I use it. Have you tried using the cleaner on hard floors? You'll be able to see more easily if it's working. I use a carpet glider attachment for rugs, and it does not so much clean the fibres as refresh and lift them. I assume the steam also sanitises the rug. Be careful not to over wet carpets and rugs.

Yes it is hissing water when first using, it's more I can't tell if it's going right through the pile. I'm getting used to it though, and have done the rug and it's looking quite fresh
