I can’t see that we’ll have a hot summer…

Is it a bit premature to be saying this? It’s cloudy and grey out here, and feels autumnal today. Last June we had a heatwave. Looking at the long term forecasts it doesn’t seem like any heat is coming our way. Do you think it’ll change? I don’t mind not having 30 degrees, but a nice summery 20 degrees would be nice!

Even just some sunny days with no rain and no gale force winds would be nice! Very strange this year, does not feel like June at all.

SallyWD · 06/06/2024 15:42

It's too early to say - we could have a heatwave in July or August.
I think the British summer is generally pretty mixed - lots of cool weather, lots of showers and then a few periods of glorious weather here and there.

Lyricallie · 06/06/2024 15:43

We have had hail stones for the last two days and had to put the heating on. I know in Scotland we don’t get it as hot as down south. However we don’t expect hail in June!

EasterlyDirection · 06/06/2024 15:46

A bit more sun would be nice and low 20s temps (no higher). It's too early to say yet though.

OhHelloMiss · 06/06/2024 15:58

I think summer has moved to sept and oct now. Always feels warmer

steamingbeet · 06/06/2024 16:09

sounds bloody awful! i’ve been out in my t shirt with lovely sun in SE

Proudofitbabe · 06/06/2024 16:11

Yet again an absolutely shit spring and summer so far. It's COLD 😩

UtterlyOtterly · 06/06/2024 16:11

There's plenty of time yet. I remember snow in June once when I was a child, in Somerset. I think we still had a lot of sunshine afterwards.

20 - 25 degrees would be perfect, no need for it to be hotter than that imo.

Not just Scotland we've had similar in the Midlands the last two days. Today has been better touch wood but it's still really cold here definitely not t-shirt weather and I saw plenty still wearing big winter coats in town today. I'm beyond bored of it feeling like November.

DogInATent · 06/06/2024 16:14

Too early to tell yet. A cool start to June doesn't tell you much about the weather in July and August.

CombatLingerie · 06/06/2024 16:19

There is an old saying ‘flaming June’ my late GF used to say yes as in ‘flaming awful’. We have just spent the last 3 weeks of May on the NE coast of Scotland. Glorious sunshine nearly every day, not high temperatures of course about 18C. Very cold at night and some sea mist but only a couple of days of rain. We walked the dogs for miles.

WhatNoRaisins · 06/06/2024 16:26

As long as it doesn't rain so much we have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all the indoor activities to keep us entertained I don't care.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 06/06/2024 16:29

I literally have started an aibu whining about exactly this! Found my people!

Mitsouko1919 · 06/06/2024 16:32

The long range forecast is for a hot July. Here's hoping!

jollygreenpea · 06/06/2024 16:40

I was working in the garden yesterday and had to put a coat on, a reasonably thick one at that.

Today is the same. :(

My Facebook memories this week have been full of blue sky photos and fun in the sun. We’ve not had a terrible day (line dried my washing) but it’s definitely not as warm as it should be. Crap.

We're I am the current temperature is 14 degrees, it's overcast and windy and people have been wearing coats and boots. You'd be positively frostbitten in a T-shirt here.

Crushed23 · 06/06/2024 17:01

I’m in London and the weather forecast for the next two weeks isn’t terrible (16-21 degrees, about 50:50 rainy and sunny days) but it’s definitely disappointing. It’s nowhere near as warm as it should be in June.

steamingbeet · 06/06/2024 17:05

so glad i live where i live!

modgepodge · 06/06/2024 17:10

The hot June last year then turned in to a wet miserable cold July and august though. I’d rather cooler now and warm when the kids break up. Not 40 degrees like 2 years ago mind…

also apparently it has technically been the warmest spring on record this year!!!!!!! The clouds have meant it hasn’t got cold overnight which drags the average up.

ALongHardWinter · 06/06/2024 18:05

We're only in early June, still plenty of time for the dreaded hot weather. It can literally change overnight.

I think people are talking about the forecast, which takes us well into mid June. That could change too of course, but not usually dramatically - the 16 degrees forecast for 4 days’ time isn’t likely to shoot up to 26 degrees.

Exactly. The highest predicted temperature we have for the next two weeks is 19 degrees but for most days it's 16 or below.

It seems vanishingly unlikely that it's suddenly going to be in the 20s. I appreciate it's not peak summer yet but two weeks from now puts us nearly in July. I feel like every time this thread comes up someone helpfully says well it could all change in a few weeks, but if we keep waiting just a few more and then a few more it will be Autumn again in the blink of an eye.
