Hiking soon after removal of air boot

Hi. My DS has broken his big toe and was put in an air boot about 2.5 weeks ago. At a recent hospital appointment they said he needed to keep it on for another four weeks and will then be reviewed again. He has a Duke of Edinburgh expedition scheduled four week and two days from now? If anyone has had broken a big toe or their DC has, would you/they have been able to go on a five day hiking expedition very soon after the air boot comes off??

Very unpredictable. How is it now in terms of pain and stiffness? Can he walk without it at all? If I wasn’t walking around comfortably in the house in 2 weeks ( from now) without it I wouldn’t fancy the 5 day trek .

He can walk fine without it but is protecting his toe when he does this, but was amazed when they said he had to keep the boot on for another four weeks. Apparently he's chipped a little bit of bone off. The toe is very stiff and bizarrely they've said he has arthritis (!!!) caused by a previous injury which neither of us can identify. It's such bad timing!
