Probation period termination?

CountryBear · 05/06/2024 20:30

My son is 18 and has been working at Food Warehouse.

He has done 12 weeks without issue. He hasn’t had any reviews or meetings and no complaints.

He had an email today which states that he has his final probation period meeting next week and he has only been put down to work for half an hour on the day of the meeting.

He is worried that he is going to be sacked or rather that he will be told he has failed the probation period.

His workplace is 90 hours over and needs to get rid of people, so he assumes that he is going to be unlucky.

I don’t think he has many rights on probation, but can they terminate without any notice period? And without any reviews or opportunities to improve?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Check his employment contract op for the notice period.

Sorry but yes they can terminate for any reason.

Check his employment contract op for the notice period.

It does say one week but they have still only given him one half an hour shift?

For the first two years they can dismiss for almost any reason regardless of probation status (other than a few automatically unfair reasons such as discrimination).

They may just pay out his notice period.

Ok, so has he a zero hours contract?

No, he does more hours but his contract is only for 7.5.

No, he does more hours but his contract is only for 7.5.

Then he either needs to work or be paid the 7.5 hours.

Thank you. Perhaps they’ll just be paying him then. Oh dear.
