What does your 5/6 year old DS wear for swimming lessons?

Mine has always worn wetsuits which seem to work well (practical, no flapping about) but he has now announced they are "babyish" and he wants separate top and shorts. I think in theory what he needs is trunks + rash vest, but everywhere I look is either enormous flappy board shorts, long skintight leggings, or really tiny Speedo type things, usually with no matching top - the first isn't practical for lessons, and he doesn't want leggings or Speedos. If anyone's DS wears the kid of thing mine is demanding, could you post a link to it to help a frazzled mum out?! TIA!

My DS6 just wears normal swimming trunks 🤷‍♀️ I think his current ones are just from Sainsbury's.

Sorry if I am missing something, but why not just a pair of trunks? My DS is a teen now, but I am sure he just wore a pair of swimming shorts for lessons once he was school age. If he has to wear a top, Next have some nice sets (although tops and bottoms seem to be sold separately, eg https://www.next.co.uk/g734629s1/n04543#n04543 or https://www.next.co.uk/style/st443615/949530#949530

my DS gets very cold so he wears a thermal rash vest & just an ordinary pair of trunks - we’ve got various handed down to us from Sainsbury’s, Mountain Warehouse etc.

Sunnysummer24 · 05/06/2024 13:19

I don’t understand why he doesn’t just wear swimming trunks? Rash vests are designed to protect from the sun.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 05/06/2024 13:20

Speedo jammers
rash vest from mountain warehouse

Ohwhoknows · 05/06/2024 13:21

Why a wetsuit in a pool?

surely just a pair of swimming shorts?

mrgrimblesgerbil · 05/06/2024 13:23

He's been wearing an all in one suit, yes. They're extremely common here amongst the younger kids.

I suggested just shorts, but he doesn't want that - his choice. None of the other boys go topless here so he's not keen.

Thanks for the links. The fat face shorts look quite baggy but it's hard to tell online.

But an actual wetsuit? Or do you mean an all in one swimming material suit?

just curious.

Youdontevengohere · 05/06/2024 13:25

Mine just wears swimming trunks from Tesco.

NuffSaidSam · 05/06/2024 13:26

He wears swimming trunks. Some of the boys wear swim shorts. But only the toddlers wear the all in one type.

stayathomer · 05/06/2024 13:27

Ps mine wear swim tops but have declared lately that they’re nearly the only ones so last time swam without. Was a lot handier afterwards for changing!!

Verite1 · 05/06/2024 13:28

My DS just wore the long speedo swimming trunks. Came to about mid thigh. Surely a rash vest would get cold in the swimming pool as they will hold water (unlike wet suit obviously).

mitogoshi · 05/06/2024 13:28

Not sure where you are because you aren't allowed wetsuits in the pool here, if you mean those sun suits for toddlers, I'm not surprised he thinks it's babyish. Normal swimming trunks are what are normally worn by boys for lessons and never seen a top on a boy, I'm guessing not in the U.K.

mindutopia · 05/06/2024 13:29

Mine just wore board shorts, but a top and shorts set would also be fine.

Caterina99 · 05/06/2024 13:33

Just regular swim shorts from the supermarket or somewhere I think. No rash vest as it’s indoors (one less thing for me wash too).

I will say that the sizing of swim shorts seems to be massive, maybe it’s just us, but DS is still in ones that are about 3 sizes down from his normal size. He is pretty skinny though and they are getting a lot shorter. So maybe don’t size up if you don’t want baggy!

mrgrimblesgerbil · 05/06/2024 13:39

Thanks all. Looks like Next or supermarket is the way to go.

Tight swim shorts, the same as every other boy in his class as far as I've noticed, his are from next.
