I've seen this book highly rated on amazon and goodreads but also many complaints that it is esoteric and a difficult, long read.

If you have read it- what was your opinion? Do you recommend it and why?

Depends on what you consider a long read, tbh. It's no Ulysses, but I found it a bit....florid and overblown.

I know lots of people (of the hippy persuasion, mostly) who consider it a seminal book, though.

I've just started reading it OP!
The writing is quite lyrical. It will appeal to people of shall we say a certain persuasion.
I'm very far from a hippy but do enjoy literature.
If you don't like flowery words then it's probably not the book for you.
