How to ask for more hours at work

Just a quick one really. I work part time in retail and I'd like to ask to increase my hours by just another 6 hours a week or so.
I'm wondering whether to ask my Manager informally first, or is it best to put a formal request in?
There's usually overtime, but I've noticed only certain colleagues seem to be offered it, which I find unfair, especially as there's been no issues with my work performance, and I've been at the company longer than most.

Just ask

Just ask. If they need you to follow a certain process they will tell you.

I just casually mentioned to my boss that I'd be interested in increasing my hours and he started the formal process.
