How do I get this fox to fuck off?!

This damn fox will not stop following me and my dog on our late night walk around the block. It's a total twat. If I take a right turn, it follows us. If I let the fox get ahead and it goes one way, I go another - and then it comes back and starts following us again!

My dog goes mad and barks and pulls at the lead when twat fox is about and it's becoming a nightly occurrence. How do I get it to piss off?! Obviously telling it to fuck off isn't working and I must look and sound like a lunatic. What can I do to shoo it away?! It's ruining our previous lovely late night walks.

I've lived in London all my life and never been harassed like this as a female lone walker or had to 'vary my route' before! Help

Don't be so fucking stupid. Look at the hatred for foxes on here - do you think teaching them that humans are a source of food is a good idea?
People who feed wildlife (except birds in winter) are morons - they endanger the animals massively and cause a lot of problems for them. Do not teach and train wild animals to come to humans. Ever. it kills them.

In all fairness, the advice i’ve read is not to feed them because they need to learn to source food themselves if they are to survive, without depending on humans. So whichever way to look at it, feeding them isn’t a good idea.

Oh FFS. My dog barks at everything - the postman, cyclists, squirrels, anyone carrying one of those tennis ball flingers, people with walking sticks... I'm not sat trying to find a way to get rid of them all so my dog never barks again.

I suppose it depends what you’re used to. My dog hardly ever barks- but he does bark at foxes. If I’m taking him round the block at 10pm as I sometimes do, I don’t want him barking his head off because I live in a quiet neighbourhood and don’t want to disturb my neighbours so I will try to avoid situations which make him bark (which means avoiding foxes).

Yes, ideally I could avoid taking him for a trot at 10pm but sometimes life gets busy and he needs a walk in the evening.

No Dfox tonight strangely. Maybe he saw this thread and the threat of a supersoaker kept him away or maybe he's out on the pull.

In anticipation of seeing Dfox I took treats which I usually wouldn't take out in the evening for DDog to distract him should we meet.

My cousin & his OH live in rural Galway & have had a fox in their garden (field) for over a year & she was so timid for ages but now happily comes out of the shadows for food & water, not too close & they've never touched or petted her & now she has a cub..I'll post a pic ot two

That said I'd be wary of my son being near one as he's like his mammy Elmyra from The Animaniacs 😆

I'm aware this is of no help sorry!

SheepAndSword · 07/06/2024 06:29

Was foxy back last night?

Scorchio84 · 07/06/2024 06:43

here's some pics from my cousins residents

@Scorchio84 they look so sweet! I still wouldn't like to be followed by one and I don't even have a dog

decionsdecisions62 · 07/06/2024 06:52

Yes one was staring at my rabbit in the garden yesterday. The rabbit is very secure and has a concrete air raid shelter to run inside to so it's quite secure.

Whatever you do don't feed it, you won't ever get rid of it if you start feeding it. I think a flashlight or shaking a water bottle to make a loud noise. This happened to me once. A fox was literally following me and my dog. I didn't like it at all.

Scorchio84 · 07/06/2024 07:19

Oh no @decionsdecisions62 that would freak me out, good job on the air raid shelter 👏

Oh god no! Listen they're beautiful wild animals but like this thread proves they are WILD animals... I wouldn't be afraid for me but with my child or if I (sadly) still had a dog I wouldn't be encouraging them, then again they're in my aunties bins or at least the ones on her green so they're becoming more Urban, something's changed & I'm sure it's humans fault, it always is 😆

I wonder was your dog "in heat"? or maybe the fox was just hungry (or horny??) I still wouldn't like that either cos I know I'd jump in & after all the canine related human deaths lately it doesn't seem wise

I think they are lovely little things, and this is a harmless animal trying to befriend someone. I don’t see the harm.

I agree, I wish one would follow me round!

iamreallyabee · 07/06/2024 11:23

I think it wants to be friends with the dog

Mychoicesaremine · 07/06/2024 12:20

When my brother was 14 he came home one day with what he proudly told us was ‘a ginger Alsatian puppy’ wanted us to keep it. It was an orphaned fox cub 😂 my mother was NOT impressed, she had to take it to a vet and then gave db a dettol bath 😂😂😂

Nooo!! 😅😅 that's hilarious! The look on your parents faces must have been golden

Haha, ‘Dfox’ didn’t even register with me 😁 I quite like a bit of casual MN abbreviation boundary creep

Except Dfox and Ddog are longer 🤣.

Rottweilermummy · 09/06/2024 08:46

One of my DSs who was early 20s seemed to have the same problem , he was telling me and his dbs one day that he had a stand off with a fox in alley not far from our house, a few days later saw it again in the street and few other times , he has not been a fan of foxes ever since ( this was in the midlands)

ActivePeony · 09/06/2024 09:12

Embarrassed for those posters labelling a wild creature a 'twat' and saying that they 'hate' foxes. Grow the fuck up FFS. 😡

Waitingfordoggo · 09/06/2024 09:23

I sometimes call domesticated animals twats, if that helps (especially the ones that live in my house).

Passthegin99 · 09/06/2024 09:25

Don't feed it or you'll never get rid of it! You're just rewarding the following if you do that... it'll be knocking on your door wanting dinner next

Restaurantcritic · 09/06/2024 09:29

Poor foxes. Just living their lives and the creeping urbanisation of the countryside has fucked up their eco system. Of course they are wild animals but their habitats are shrinking and they are forced to live like feral cats. It’s very sad.

i know doesn’t help OP but I’m just sad at the state of wildlife in the U.K.

GreenFritillary · 09/06/2024 10:05

Judging by the stink and shit they leave, foxes patrol our small urban garden at night.
On the other hand it is reassuring to know that no rats would dare to nest in the undergrowth.

Me too. And loads more house building to come. 🙁
