How do I get this fox to fuck off?!

Donutbed · 04/06/2024 23:13

This damn fox will not stop following me and my dog on our late night walk around the block. It's a total twat. If I take a right turn, it follows us. If I let the fox get ahead and it goes one way, I go another - and then it comes back and starts following us again!

My dog goes mad and barks and pulls at the lead when twat fox is about and it's becoming a nightly occurrence. How do I get it to piss off?! Obviously telling it to fuck off isn't working and I must look and sound like a lunatic. What can I do to shoo it away?! It's ruining our previous lovely late night walks.

I've lived in London all my life and never been harassed like this as a female lone walker or had to 'vary my route' before! Help

its a youngster and it’s probably been fed by people so associates humans with food so is following you in the hope of getting fed as well .

SirQuintusAurelius · 04/06/2024 23:49

Maybe it works for MI5 and is tailing you. (see what I did there).

Shouldn't the title be "how can I get it to fox off"?

The comments😂 some of you are the type to say, ‘it’s just looking for food and shelter’ when someone has a pest issue in their property

Well, that’s exactly what’s happening!

@TheFormidableMrsC rural and urban foxes are VERY different.

Yes indeed they are. It always amazes me when I visit daughter in London and they're hanging around like stray cats, completely comfortable around people. If I see one here, it's fleeting and they actively avoid humans. Very different behaviour. I do love them though. Beautiful creatures.

The fix isn’t in the OP’s property, it is existing in the outside world where it lives!

Goldenbear · 05/06/2024 00:04

Fox not fix

Marblessolveeverything · 05/06/2024 00:06

Wear a pro hunting t-shirt next time. Or failing that approach asking does it was to be saved?

They are beautiful.

Chypre · 05/06/2024 00:06

Try waving it off with a proper flashlight (phone light would not do).

Orchidacea · 05/06/2024 00:11

Get the council to issue a CPN. 😂

(Sorry, OP, I know it's bothering you but I don't know anything about handling foxes.)

Whisteria · 05/06/2024 00:14

Donutbed · 04/06/2024 23:28

It's not doing me harm but it's driving my dog absolutely mad and I have to outrun it so my dog will chill and have his night time poo! My dog is really wound up to the point I can feel his heart thumping through the lead

Is your dog nervous of other dogs or animals? If you’re trying to outrun a fox you’re stressing your dog. The dog will be picking up on your stress and anxiety. We live in the arse of nowhere and have deer, foxes badgers and loads of other wildlife around. Just keep walking and reassuring the dog, I think it’s your stress that’s causing the issue more than the dog or the fox.

Donutbed · 05/06/2024 00:27

Thanks for the advice. When I say I'm trying to outrun the fox I'm not actually running - just going a different way, turning another corner or whatever. It's my DDog that's wound up really. I keep reassuring him 'This way DDog, it's ok, ignore the fox, good boy, it's ok' etc etc.

DDog can see and presumably still smell Dfox when it approaches us for the umpteenth time...

Let's see what tomorrow night brings.

You need a cunning plan to outfox it.

Foxes never furget a face.

You will have to be sly and think outside the fox.

Have you tried doing the fox trot?

Or looking for answers on FireFox?

You’ll have to fox clever.

I’ll get me (fake fur) coat…

Tomatina · 05/06/2024 01:24

I'd actually love this and take it as a compliment to be followed by a beautiful wild creature. As someone else said, the dog is probably picking up on your unease about the fox. It won't do you or your dog any harm.

MyDogsLikePaddleBoarding · 05/06/2024 01:48

Aw. When we lived in a city, we had a fox that used to play with our cat. He’d make noise until we let the cat out and then they’d run round together or just sit in companionable silence.

SammyScrounge · 05/06/2024 02:21

It likes you. You should be flattered!
My Dad used to feed an old fox. its muzzle was all grey and his fur was thin and shabby and Dad felt sorry for it. One summer it brought its mate and two cubs to visit. The cubs played on the grass in the evening sun. and the old rascal lay in the grass watching them.
Then Dad had to go into hospital. The fox came to the garden as usual but my Mum was afraid of it and didn't feed it so it stopped coming.
Three months.passed and Dad was.in the last days of his life. He wanted to die at home so an ambulance brought him. Mid afternoon I saw.my Dad smiling - the fox had returned but was behaving oddly. He sat up straight in the middle of the lawn and just stared at my Dad's window
It didn't move a muscle for.hours. Next day the fox repeated the whole act. Dad took his last breath and as if it knew, the fox got up and wandered off. It never came back after that.it gave me chills seeing how intensely the fox stared.

Foxlover46 · 05/06/2024 02:30

I think it's a blessing , when you leave the house leave it a egg , they love a egg then it will probably leave you be

TeaPleaseX · 05/06/2024 02:33

I have one who follows me home she has done for a year. She's recently given birth in my garden so I now have 6 of them 😂. I do like them.
However I'd appreciate that they'd stop bringing eggs in as every morning I wake up to egg shells in the garden??
Also my cats hate them and the fox cubs think my cats are fellow foxes and want to play with them. The cats get annoyed and chase them off so it can be quite noisy!

SheepAndSword · 05/06/2024 02:38

@SammyScrounge ❤️

SinnerBoy · 05/06/2024 02:52

Whatever you do, don't feed it, or you'll never get rid of it!

Meadowfinch · 05/06/2024 04:10

It looks quite young. Its mum probably has new fox cubs and it's been 'kicked out' to fend for itself.

It's looking for food and hoping you will abandon a late night kebab etc. Do not give it food or you'll never be rid of it.

MariaVT65 · 05/06/2024 04:30

Agree with PPs op, DO NOT feed it whatever you do. Otherwise it will see you as a food source and keep coming back.

Another pp suggesting bringing a torch with you. I have also read that foxes don’t like flashing lights so if you have a torch, bring it with you and flash as the fox.

I don’t care what other people think, I know it’s rare, but i’ve read too many stories about foxes entering homes and attacking babies. So i’m also in team ‘fuck off fox’

Lurkingandlearning · 05/06/2024 05:16

Spareincoming · 04/06/2024 23:25

A supersoaker will do the job.

Works for me in my garden. I don’t have to squirt it anymore, just go out with it and strike a Rambo pose and off they go.

I don’t think OP is anti fox as such but if it’s setting her dog off late evening that will be annoying for her and people in the houses who might be trying to sleep
