I passed my driving test! I’m too embarrassed to tell people IRL so I’m telling MN

I’m 32 and feel a bit stupid telling people I’ve passed my test when most people do it as teenagers or early 20s. I’ve really lost confidence in myself over the years so I’m actually really pleased with myself for passing first time. I feel like I’m not completely useless for once. Please share your good news too!

Queen Elizabeth trained as a driver and mechanic during World War Two, but she never had a driving test and she didn't need a licence.

(UK driver licences are issued in the name of the monarch, who is the only one in the country allowed to drive without one.)

It just isn't fair! And she had all those castles and things!

Catsmere · 05/06/2024 11:58

Well done, @squashyhat!

DrCoconut · 05/06/2024 13:16

I was 38. Congratulations

Congratulations that’s amazing! You should be very proud :)

I’m late 30s and have my test booked for later this summer 🥳

Mattenshough799 · 05/06/2024 13:20

Well done op! You should be very proud indeed!

I learned to swim on my back for the first time in my early forties! 😃

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/06/2024 13:20

I passed at 33 and it was a complete life changer! I’m grateful every day for my car and being able to drive it. You just appreciate it so much when you learn later!

Thesunisanorange · 05/06/2024 13:21

Just RTFT and it was very encouraging to read stories of people passing in their 30s,40s, 50s and beyond!

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 05/06/2024 13:23

That's a big achievement. I got mine at a similar age and it took a while but now I enjoy driving and I really enjoy the freedom its given me. Congratulations.

JamSandle · 05/06/2024 13:24

I'm only just learning mid 30s so I say this is a huge achievement! Congratulations!

AliceCallous · 05/06/2024 13:26

Yes, don't feel embarrassed. I got mine in my early thirties too. It's still a massive achievement you should be very proud of. Those tests are really bloody hard!

Katspin · 05/06/2024 13:28

Congrats!!
I passed mine last year at 29, and the friend who referred me to my driving instructor passed at 31. I do think this is quite common nowadays, especially in cities.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 05/06/2024 13:30

Well done! Feels bloody brilliant doesn’t it? Like you are the first ever.

Confusedmermaid1 · 05/06/2024 13:32

Congrats!! You should be so proud of yourself 😊

My DH is 33 and has his test next month 🤞🏼
I honestly think it’s harder learning when you’re older and wiser, when you’re 17 you think you’re invincible but at 33 and having previously worked in motor injury claims, DH is very aware of how important it is to be a safe driver if that makes sense.. I’m very much looking forward to being a passenger princess when he passes 😂

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 05/06/2024 13:34

Well done ❤️ so pleased for you!
Little story about when I passed my test, I was too nervous to cross traffic so everywhere I went I turned right, basically went to every destination in a circle, took some serious planning tbh.
I can turn left now 😁

TheSock · 05/06/2024 13:37

Congratulations op!

Please don’t embarrassed - I passed my test at 36 (only 2 years ago!)

One of the best things I’ve ever done

AngeloMysterioso · 05/06/2024 13:37

I passed just shy of 2 years ago a few days after my 37th birthday!!

Congrats OP. It will change your life. I can’t believe I waited 20 years!

CoastalCalm · 05/06/2024 13:38

My husband was 45 when he passed and everyone was impressed when he told them - shout it from the rooftops !

LakeTiticaca · 05/06/2024 13:40

Well done!! I passed when I was 34. I was like a dog with two tails for weeks afterwards!! Couldn't believe it!!😆😆
My aunt passed when she was 50!!!

WearyAuldWumman · 05/06/2024 13:42

Congratulations!🍸

At 32 - lol - congrats better late than never

IMO, you have been sensible and ensured you had enough money to support your car etc

You've told us and I'm happy for you - TBH, if you don't want to share don't as many with bif mouths, I can see them sniggering - the bottom line, WELL DONE!!!

Motnight · 05/06/2024 15:05

Congratulations Op! My DH has also just passed and he is nearer to 60 than 50!

Euromonkey · 05/06/2024 17:04

When you are young you are used to learning new skills and sitting tests, it takes you out your comfort zone the older you get so it's even more of an accomplishment!

I passed when I was 40. Despite not being a natural (nerves had put me off learning for years) I was proud of myself, especially as I could then take my children to places and activities much more easily.

Well done @Nosferatutu enjoy your new found freedom.

Euromonkey · 05/06/2024 17:10

Just to add it made me feel like a 'grown-up', I was always a bit embarrassed to not be able to do something so many others could do (which was my hang-up I know!)

Nosferatutu · 06/06/2024 17:18

Hugosmaid · 04/06/2024 23:41

Are you my daughter? Although she is 28 soon.

She’s just passed but won’t tell any one - even her bf - because apparently he thinks she can already drive!

Massive congratulations though!

No I’m not! I think lots of people do just presume over a certain age you can drive.

yay!! That is great news!

One of my friends passed last year at the age of 63. Her husband was a controlling sort and never let her learn (said she was too ditzy to drive and he would drive her to places if he approved of where she wanted to go). When he passed away she booked in for her first ever lesson within the week.

That’s amazing. What a woman!
