What happens to assets if a family dies on holiday?

We're going on holiday and we don't have a will. I know, I know. It's on my list. Even when I've thought about a will though, I've only considered leaving everything split between my children.

God forbid if a family died - Parents and children. What happens to their assets? Would they go to the parents families?

If you are genuinely worried by this, you can write on a piece of paper your wishes and have it witnessed by someone not in your family. You can get sample wording from the Internet when your affairs are relatively simple. Sign it and leave it somewhere prominent in your house. Ideally email a copy to key family members too so there is lesser chance of disputes later. Your dh should do the same.

It is not a perfect solution but can help grieving relatives not to have extra hassle if the worst happens.

You can state you are holding $xxx money on behalf of xxx if it's as clear as that.

Then when you are back get proper advice. This will cover what happens if you die with or without your husband. For example, Mine says if my husband and I die due to the same event within 30 days of each other , our assets will be split and distributed to "our" side of the family. It didn't seem fair that the younger spouse's family got it by default. Hopefully it's all hypothetical anyway!
