Perhaps everyone already knew this, but I’ve just found this out by accident.

What you do is type a word and the put a square bracket without a space. Then just type a letter and the emojis come up. See the picture.*

*may only work on iPads.

They are just the traditional MN emojis. No secret if you have been here long enough. Also plainly available as an emoji option in the message box. HmmBiscuitSmile

Doesn't work on iPhone annoyingly but typing the full word gets these ones.

I know about the traditional MN emojis. What I was referring to was the way you can get them to pop up and show you a list.

Thank you! I had a break from MN and when I came back I couldn't find these.

Its on the message box. A little smiley face then the mumsnet M brings them all up. Blush This one is my favourite, no other emoji looks this embarrassed.

Thank you for this - I didn’t know.

There's always 😵‍💫 to use if you can't get Confused

I am very fond of the old-school MN emojis. You can see at a glance what they mean - no squinting to see whether it’s ‘crying’ or ‘crying with laughter’.
And there is the sceptical emoji:
[ hmm ] Hmm

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 04/06/2024 10:31

Hmm is or should be at the heart of many MN discussions.

I recall the frisson of excitement whenever a new emoji was unveiled. Those were the days, eh?

And the gloriously odd names. why are the emojis [confused ] and [shock ], for example, not [shocked ]? why is the mug [brew ] and not [tea ]?

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 04/06/2024 12:25

Oh, quite, but there was an extensive, idiosyncratic MN vocabulary then such as norks and fanjo. Coincidentally, I’ve only just realised that the double dashes no longer work for striking out.

SheilaFentiman · 04/06/2024 13:39

Nooo to the double dash - though it is good that strike through is there in the message box as well as bold etc

TheFunHasGone · 04/06/2024 13:46

And the creepy wee brackets

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 03/06/2024 23:10

Remember the days not that long ago where these were the only emoticons that could be used on mumsnet and each had to be typed out with the brackets when you wanted to use it Grin

Yes! And for reasons I don't even understand I don't like seeing non MN emoji on MN.

Are emojis and emoticons the same thing BTW? If not what's the difference. And if so when and why did they change from emoticons to emoji?

OhMoreDrama · 04/06/2024 13:49

I think I'll just stick to using the hundreds that come with my phone keyboard.

heldinadream · 04/06/2024 13:50

Archers wtf is this little blighter? Confused

LookItsMeAgain · 04/06/2024 14:10

SheilaFentiman · 03/06/2024 22:51

Back when it were all fields and cupcakes and bunting

And lemon drizzle cake....don't forget the lemon drizzle cake.

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 04/06/2024 14:11

BiscuityBoyle · 03/06/2024 23:28

And I remember when you would quote someone by putting what they had said in bold.

Also putting things in italics using creepy wee brackets

Aren't these <> the creepy wee brackets? Which isn't how you make italics

minipie · 04/06/2024 14:12

creepy wee circumflexes isn’t it?
