Bloody M&S

I’m not a frequent food shopper in M&S, so don’t ever buy the meal deal, but I’ve got a busy week so decided to treat myself to some ready meals. I chose a lasagne and saw it was In the deal, so chose a veg and a pudding which also looked to be in the deal. I even checked with a member of staff who was hanging around the self checkout section, yes it’s in the deal. Paid. When I got home I realised I’d been charged full price, and I wouldn’t have got the pudding if I’d known.
Its too far to go back and complain, but in future I’ll be going to the tills to check out.

This was your error, you should have checked!

Surely you realised your bill was more than you expected when you paid?

They did check with a member of staff, it's not their fault at all

Kungfoopanda · 03/06/2024 15:08

Can you email them? I've been overcharged like this before and customer services sent me the money no problem. I think it was a voucher but I shop there loads so was happy with that

I’ve just gone on Messenger to see if I can get it checked. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’d checked with a member of staff, I’d just put it down to being my own fault.

Have you logged it with 101?

😵

Dryplate · 03/06/2024 15:15

Don't you check what you're paying before you pay? Surely with a fixed price meal deal the error (whoever''s it was) would be obvious.

I didn't just buy the meal deal, and there was a queue so felt rushed.

I think this is an example of how food as become so cheap. Both mum and MIL woukd have known roughly what their bill should be before going to the till, neither would leave the shop without checking the receipt. That was just normal practice when food was a much bigger % of household expenses.

I always run an eye over it, and check special offers went through before leaving and usually know more or less what it should come to.

Remagirl · 03/06/2024 15:25

Send CS a copy of receipt and explain. I'm sure they'll reimburse you.

DustyLee123 · 03/06/2024 15:26

They’ve asked to see the receipt, so I’ll either be told it’s not in the deal, or hopefully get a refund in some way.

You were told it was in the deal so that would massively piss me off if they come back and say no

This.

I don't understand with the current COL crisis how people just buy without having a clue of their bill! We aren't struggling at all but still have an idea and check the receipt to make sure the offers have come off.

As for 'there was a queue so I felt rushed' sod that, take your time and sort yourself out, worry not about other people- they aren't worried about you!

Currently peri menopausal, so battling with new feelings like lack of self confidence and not wanting to be a nuisance, hence why I checked with the member of staff. I didn’t want to cause a hold up in self check out when there was a queue.

Update - the veg was not in the deal, so as a goodwill gesture they are refunding the difference by email.

The problem is that they now have so many deals at the same time that they are confused themselves. it might be : Dine in, family night out, supper for two, tea for three, Italian evening, Indian breakfast….so obviously staff is not up to date with all of these plus if say starter is included in the deal and you didn’t take one - you wouldn’t get a deal 🥲 (can you tell that I’ve learned it hard way) plus people often put things back in a wrong fridge - so you can take fries from the shelf which in reality shouldn’t being on this shelf at all and not a part of the deal or a big cheesecake whereas the part of the deal is a small pack with 2 pieces of that cheesecake.
its so confusing, you need a degree just to go through this.

And don’t even start me on prices per unit, prices per kilo, prices per 100g and prices per item .

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/06/2024 15:49

I’ve had a similar experience when there was a distinct lack of clarity about what was and wasn’t in the meal deal.

Im glad you’re getting a refund OP.

TheFlis · 03/06/2024 15:53

M&S dine in and multi buys are often glitchy on the tills, they have been for years! I have had similar issues multiple times so it’s always worth double checking the total and that discounts have been applied before you pay.

Or actually the OP has checked twice and it’s an error in the computer system? Like it happens many times - not just M and S but Tesco and the likes too.

And no I might not have realised if I was buying something else with it.
Do you always check your bill that carefully at the till?

Good for you??

I mean that great.
Inalso have an idea of roughly im going to spend. I still wouldn’t see a £5 difference or what ever it was.

MathiasBroucek · 03/06/2024 17:58

Wow. Some unsympathetic people on here.... Glad you got a refund, OP

BluesBird19764 · 26/09/2024 19:51

be careful checking with staff who are hanging around. M&S have had a policy in last year or two of sending in non-store staff onto the shop floor to get and I quote “closer to customers” as a consequence you will bump into folk who might look the part but actually haven’t got a clue because their day job is in marketing or finance etc. these poor people are obliged to fulfil an annual quota of days in store even though most of the time they are just getting in the way. Still saves a few quid!
