Would you feel ill after eating this?

This is not a competitive under eating thread, I’m just wondering why on earth i feel so shit all the time (lethargic)

I had porridge and nuts this morning for breakfast. Had been up early (kids) so was peckish again at about 11, and had 2 pieces of homemade bread with butter and jam. I rarely eat jam as I do try and have healthy food for meals but I do have chocolate etc. I feel utterly shit now, lethargic, bloated. Doesn’t really matter what I eat most days I feel terrible. I do understand jam isn’t healthy but I’ve tried eggs and things and hardly ever feel good after food.

can normal people just eat lunch and not get that post lunch dip?

No, I’d feel ok. The porridge was good. If the jammy toast is lunch then it’s not very much. It would tide me over until I had my dinner, but I’d feel hungry.
If you feel awful no matter what you eat OP, then maybe it’s time to book some blood tests.

I might feel a bit lethargic as it's quite 'cosy' food for me.

Try no grains and see if you feel any better otherwise a trip to the dr.

Try eggs on their own or an omelette with whatever veg you like. Or full fat yoghurt with nuts and berries.

I'd feel OK but would probably be hungry for lunch. I couldn't eat like that every day though as I'd find it quite "dry" food and without the fibre of vegetables I would be bloated and not pooping well 😬. How much liquid are you drinking? I feel generally rubbish if I don't get enough liquid (much more than I'd have thought - usually about 4L spread across the day)

It's quite carby, so that would make me bloated and sleepy a bit, plus the sugar will crash you.
But you mention eggs don't seem to agree either?
Could you be gluten intolerant, or also allergic to eggs?
Maybe try just eating salad or soup at lunch, or some fruit?
As long as you have a decent evening meal there's no need for a big lunch.

eurochick · 03/06/2024 13:55

Mass produced bread can make me feel a bit shit. The stuff from our breadmaker doesn't have that effect.

BlastedPimples · 03/06/2024 18:58

I have found bread and oats and pasta carbs make me really lethargic especially in the day time. To the point where I just want to snooze.

So I stick to fruit and tea for breakfast. Big smoothie mid morning with banana, spinach, avocado, berries and protein powder.

Could have a late lunch of poached eggs on toast or something but I will be sluggish. This is a recent development for me. It's annoying.

I then eat normally in the evening and I am fine.

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/06/2024 19:00

I’d feel heavy after porridge and then homemade bread. It’s not the jam that’s the problem, it’s the bulky carbs. I like them but too much is definitely bloating.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/06/2024 19:01

Can you keep a food journal for a couple of weeks? It may help you identify which foods you feel the worst afterwards, which could point to an intolerance.

One of the things about homemade bread is many people have a tendency to cut doorstep slices - if you’re one of them you may have eaten really quite a lot of bread, which would account for the bloating and sluggishness.

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2024 19:17

porridge used to make me feel hungry

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2024 19:18

sounds like the sugar in the bread as well as the jam gave you a High and then a crash.
i cant eat bake beans on toast at lunch time as this has a crash affect on me

do you have a walk after lunch?
i try to do that to stop the lethargy

justasking111 · 03/06/2024 19:19

Are you generally tired and lethargic @Giveupnow .

NuffSaidSam · 03/06/2024 19:20

If you feel ill regardless of what you eat then logic would suggest it's not the food making you ill. Unless it's something like gluten that you're having everyday. Perhaps a trip to the GP is in order?

Chipsahoy · 03/06/2024 19:26

Bread definitely bloats me.
I had two scones today and definitely feeling it!

Better days for me are when I have eggs on sour dough toast for breakfast, sweet potato pakora or falafel salad, sometimes in a wrap for lunch. I also have a smoothie and add in protein powder and kefir.
Dinner can then be whatever.

Meganmeccano · 03/06/2024 19:28

You could have porridge again for lunch, or soup or eggs with your toast, and a banana ?

fruitpastille · 03/06/2024 19:34

I sometimes feel a little sleepy after lunch if I relax with a warm drink but it's because I'm tired, not because of what I've eaten. I would enjoy porridge for breakfast and bread and butter for elevenses and happily eat lunch a couple of hours later but if I did that all the time I'd gain weight. Food doesn't make me feel unwell or bloated or whatever.

Brrrrrrrrrritscold · 03/06/2024 19:34

Can be a sign of insulin resistance. I was the same, don’t eat porridge anymore and only sourdough which doesn’t seem to have the same effect on me. I’d swap the porridge for Greek yoghurt, fruit and nuts. How’s your weight? Since I lost a lot of weight it seems to affect me less.

Seeline · 03/06/2024 19:36

Two slices of jammy toast at 11am isn't lunch though?
I'd still need lunch later to get me through to an evening meal.
What happens if you have a hearty homemade soup, or beans on toast, or a baked potato with cheese or a salad with tuna etc? Some fruit and yogurt?

Dryplate · 03/06/2024 19:38

I do get a slump whenever I have even a small amount of refined sugar, but not after a normal meal.

WonderingWanda · 03/06/2024 19:39

Are you drinking plenty of water?

WhatNext24 · 03/06/2024 19:41

I'd feel lethargic after that. I don't stomach starchy carbs well and bread in particular makes me crash. The eggs comment doesn't fit this though, so it might be worth seeing your doctor just to check for allergies etc.

Giveupnow · 03/06/2024 19:53

Soooooooo update- turns out I have a vomiting bug (caught from toddler Petri dish)

guess that explains it 🙈 sorry everyone
