I never have. Never flown anything but economy.

If you've ever been given a free upgrade on a flight make me jealous and tell me how it happened?

"The best chance is in Premium Economy because it's a small cabin which is often full so they roll people forward to Club."

Yes, that's what happened the one and only time I was upgraded. I was traveling with my adult son, flying Canada to the UK in premium economy with BA. We had pre-booked seats and were meant to be seated in the front row of the premium economy section, but for some reason they had to change planes to one that had fewer seats and our whole row were upgraded to business class.

I never have been. I saw my BIL get upgraded once. He was flying alone to London and must have only been 16 or 17 and the rest of us were going somewhere else. MIL asked if they could upgrade him and they did. They were both high status with the airline which is probably why they upgraded him.

Several times. Because I am gold/gold equivalent in their frequent flyer clubs.

Airlines don't upgrade randoms who fly infrequently (unless there's an incident and it's the only space on the plane to move someone) and definitely not because it's your birthday/getting married/just got married.

My random brother got upgraded on an airline we’d never flown before. He went up to business. Me and our mum stayed in economy. I have to say the leg room was amazing anyway, so no loss to us. LAN Chile years ago. So yeah, it happens

Yes, DH is Emirates Platinum as he does a lot of business travel. We were once upgraded from Economy to First between Dubai and Heathrow. Now he always travels Business and when we occasionally travel together we're in Business. We went to Thailand last year and he used reward miles to upgrade us to First both ways.

It's never happened to me when flying alone though!

Twice, once as a solo traveller on my way to a wedding in America and once for a flight within Europe but I can’t remember where when with DH. The America trip was with BA.

I was quite young & flying to The US for a job - it was the first time I had ever flown on my own. Got upgraded to Business Class if I remember rightly & couldn’t get over actually going upstairs on a plane!

There used to be an upstairs economy on transatlantic flights, my DB and I went upstairs once when I was 19 so he would have been 16.
It was an odd configuration where it could be 2 or 3 but annoyingly we had window and middle and had someone next to us and other seats had no third passenger.

I agree it's almost always solo passengers in business dress who get upgraded. Once I thought, I'll put on some earrings before I get on, and I got upgraded (nice linen blouse visible over counter, joggers not visible, I'm sure it was completely unrelated but I like to think it helped!).

Dh and I were upgraded to first class on a flight between Abu Dhabi and Columbo (Sri Lanka) once. It was a lovely surprise. But once we got on the plane, it was very obvious that we were literally the only, well, White people on the whole plane. It made me feel a bit icky about the whole thing frankly, but the food and the service was really nice.
