How often have you been called for Jury Service?

I've never been called, neither has DH, but DS has just received his second notice, having first served less than 2.5 years ago. He's only 23 now.

He'll do his duty, but is quite disruptive for him in his early career. Whilst you'd hope the employer understands it's not his fault, they still don't like it.

Why do some people get called repeatedly and others not at all?

I was called once when I was 22. Had to go to court 3 of the days, never made it onto an actual Jury. It was a pain with work because I effectively got sent back to work but had three days off!

Never been called since. I’d like to be called and actually be on a jury!!

Westfacing · 02/06/2024 13:38

Once, 42 years ago - to the Old Bailey.

Westfacing · 02/06/2024 13:39

I don't know the rules but could your son not point out that he's only 23 and has already done his civic duty?

Never!

HollyFern1110 · 02/06/2024 13:41

I've never been called. Nor has DH or either of my adult DS'.

My dad did jury service once, in his late 50s, and my mum was called not long before she passed away but was unable to do it due to ill health.

In general, very few people I know have been called & nobody twice to my knowledge.

Emdubz70 · 02/06/2024 13:41

I’ve been called 3 times. 1997, 2011 and 2020; 2020 got cancelled because of Covid though.

GoogleWhacking · 02/06/2024 13:41

My DS was called at 21, got a hideous sexual assault case that went back many years. He dealt with it so well I was really proud of him.

Much to both mine and my mums bemusement, we have never been called.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 02/06/2024 13:41

Some people definitely seem to be called more than others. My dad always wanted to do it and neither parents ever had. I've been called once but had a 2 day old baby so they said they'd come back to me. 22 years later - nothing.

Littletreefrog · 02/06/2024 13:42

Never I am ineligible due to my job.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2024 13:42

Never would love to though. DH never been called or my parents as far as I know

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/06/2024 13:43

Once, three years ago. Really interesting to see/be part of the process (and very gratifying to see a rapist be sentenced for 14 years).

One of the other jurors had done it before, and another was on his third time.

Thought it was meant to be kept secret

Queenofwistfulthinking · 02/06/2024 13:43

Roughly about once a year .

Beezknees · 02/06/2024 13:44

I never have but a relative has been called twice.

2chocolateoranges · 02/06/2024 13:44

Dh and I have been called 4 times
Ds who is 22 has been called 2 times (first was months after his 18th)
dd has been called once.

Onlyagirl · 02/06/2024 13:46

5 times! I wish I had the same sort of 'luck' with my premium bonds.

wheresthebigcarrot · 02/06/2024 13:48

@teaandtoastwithmarmite one presumes that once the case has finished you can find just as much info out in a newspaper / online as you can from a juror. Of course.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/06/2024 13:49

Once and got it deferred (can't recall why). Not heard since.

rollonretirementfgs · 02/06/2024 13:51

I did it last year... bloody loved it! Most of the people on my jury were 2nd or even 3rd timers so it does seem that the same people get chosen again

Tarkan · 02/06/2024 13:51

Just once but I have a medical exemption so didn't have to go.

A friend has been called twice this year, she also got a medical exemption and it was just after it expired that she got the second.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/06/2024 13:52

No, but there are rules. You can't discuss the case with external people whilst it's on. You can only discuss it with fellow jurors if you're all together. Jury deliberations are confidential forever.

Martinohmygod · 02/06/2024 13:53

Once DD called up at the same time and same court had to tell them we were mother and daughter.

Justcallmebebes · 02/06/2024 13:55

Twice. First time sat on a rape trial and second time burglary/assault. About 10 years apart. I had fantastic fellow jurors on the first rape trial and some of us are still in contact now

Elderflower14 · 02/06/2024 13:55

I served in 2008. Got called earlier this year and for various reasons, work, distance lack of public transport I managed to get voided..

Isitchill · 02/06/2024 13:56

Never. I'm 50.
