How often have you been called for Jury Service?

I've never been called, neither has DH, but DS has just received his second notice, having first served less than 2.5 years ago. He's only 23 now.

He'll do his duty, but is quite disruptive for him in his early career. Whilst you'd hope the employer understands it's not his fault, they still don't like it.

Why do some people get called repeatedly and others not at all?

I’m 36, never been called. I would actually like to experience it. Although I would love a (what I would deem interesting) interesting case, just so it’s worth all the hassle

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/06/2024 23:02

Never. 46. Husbands been called twice, deferred the first one and did the second one. That was years ago, he's 50

Guavafish1 · 04/06/2024 23:03

never.... I assume that's because I'm coloured

My friend was called every 2yrs for 10 years. Her employer paid her so she was able to do it easily.

I couldn’t do it as I’m self employed and couldn’t manage on £63/ day.

treacledan71 · 04/06/2024 23:16

Twice. 2 years in between. Last one about 10 years ago. Had crb checks for my job then. I noticed lots of people i know who had them were called. Might just be a coincidence though.

blueshoes · 04/06/2024 23:25

Never been called. If it is a horrific case, like child abuse or sexual assault, I am not sure how I can cope. Will probably get secondary PTSD. Think of the judges who hear these things day in and day out.

cadburyegg · 04/06/2024 23:28

Never, I'm 36. My exh has been called twice (he's 39) but never actually sat on a case.

Ginkypig · 04/06/2024 23:37

I got called twice in my 20’s one time I didn’t get called on the day then the other I had to excuse myself.

since Covid though iv been called 5 times! Every time not being called on the day except once when I was on standby for three days then dismissed.

im expecting another one any time soon if the last few years are anything to go by

Rathersurprised · 04/06/2024 23:56

Once, but excused as a single parent with no child care. Offered to do it in the school holidays when kids could go to their dads (a hours drive away) but never heard anything since.

pinkhorsesarentunicorns · 05/06/2024 00:04

Twice. Once when I was 22, the other in the past year or so.

The first time I was part of a group that eventually ended up on a large, multi person murder trial. Managed to get myself out of that one as I had worked with one of the suspects. In the end I ended up on a 4 day trial for a pub brawl. The rest of the time was just spent sitting around watching Jeremy Kyle

The most recent one I was called for I have got myself permanently excused from on health grounds.

DH is also permanently excluded due to his job.

blueshoes · 05/06/2024 00:15

What sort of jobs gets you excluded from jury duty?

Mooche · 05/06/2024 00:40

I've been called 4 times 🙈

Last time recently at the Old Bailey for a murder trial.

First time I was only about 19. Too immature for it, was so scared to do it but I had no reason and my dad said I had to do it. First case was a rape case. Pretty harrowing and probably too immature for that even though I did understand everything and made a careful decision when voting.

I actually enjoy it now, I take it very seriously and really just want to get the right decision as a jury. It's an interesting experience.

Lucimaya · 05/06/2024 00:44

Never been called. I think if I did I would have the time now though, so that probably means I won't be called! I would quite like to sit on the jury of an interesting (but not too gruesome or violent) case.

Lucimaya · 05/06/2024 00:46

Police used to be excluded, however, not anymore.

Vates · 05/06/2024 05:05

Never, thankfully. I wouldn't be able to do it because of severe mental health problems.

My Sister was called up last year and said it was a lot of waiting around!

gettingolderbutcooler · 05/06/2024 08:56

Once.

GeniusLevelJaffaCake · 05/06/2024 10:02

Twice, but have never actually served. First time I got called I'd just moved to the other end of the country, and was called to serve in my original area, so I was allowed to defer. Second time, I'd just started a full-time degree course and was once again allowed to defer. Both times were before I was 21 years old and I've never been called again.

AlltheFs · 05/06/2024 10:05

Never, I’m 46. I wouldn’t mind doing it as long as not a very long trial and not in school hols.
I can’t afford to lose the pay for a long trial as I earn far more than they pay.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/06/2024 10:10

Twice, once when I had a toddler and an EBF small baby, and was excused.

Second time, I was in my 50s, did it, found it very enlightening and in a sense enjoyable.

MabelMaybe · 05/06/2024 10:14

My dad was called up decades ago to be on the jury in a coroner's court. Had a case where a child was killed, which was really upsetting; it got referred through to crown court by the Coroner.

No-one else in my family has ever been called up. I always wonder when you see high profile investigations ongoing on TV, if you get the invite and realise what case you might get called up for.

CocoapuffPuff · 05/06/2024 10:17

Been called twice, haven't yet had to sit on a jury. Scotland.

First time I had to attend in person and was there for a morning before they chose the jury from the pool of about 50 folk they'd called in. That was it, over and done with. This was for a High Court case.

Second time was last year, and I had to wait for a phone call each day to see if I was needed. After 2 or 3 days of not being required, I was told not to ring in again. That was it. I probably would have had to go in, but I missed the call on the first day as I was driving and by the time I called them back, they'd filled the seats. Sheriff Court this time.

the80sweregreat · 05/06/2024 10:19

Never, but my mum did it in the late 80s and she said it was fascinating.
They did dismiss all the jury after about a week, so it was short lived for her in London!
It was a fraud case I think.

Yoopoy · 05/06/2024 10:20

Got the letter once, but wrote back to say I was unable to do it due to disability and was excused.

AgeingDoc · 05/06/2024 10:44

I've been called twice but didn't do it either time. I wouldn't have minded actually but first time round we were desperately short staffed at work and my absence would have had a signifucant impact on patient care so I asked to be excused and it was granted.
Second time I was called to be on a jury at an inquest, which is quite unusual and I think would have been really interesting but the person had died in the hospital where I worked. Whilst I hadn't treated them myself, I did know staff members who had so I declared a potential conflict of interest and they excused me again.
Sods law being what it is, since I retired I haven't been called and I'd be perfectly willing to do it now. I think it's just random people picked off the electoral roll but I don't know many people who have done it. Getting called twice in such a short time is really unlucky.
