How often have you been called for Jury Service?

I've never been called, neither has DH, but DS has just received his second notice, having first served less than 2.5 years ago. He's only 23 now.

He'll do his duty, but is quite disruptive for him in his early career. Whilst you'd hope the employer understands it's not his fault, they still don't like it.

Why do some people get called repeatedly and others not at all?

THREE TIMES 😭😭😭

Refused all (I have ASD agoraphobia and selective mutism and I just cannot do it)

LadyWiddiothethird · 02/06/2024 15:52

Twice,about 5 years apart.

I’ve never been called, but many years ago a classmate was called a few weeks after his 18th birthday and was able to get out of it because we were about to start our A-levels. My mother has been called twice, but was able to postpone the first time (can’t remember why).

35 and never been called. DH is 40 and never has been. My parents are in their sixties and FIL in his eighties and none of them have been called either.

kkneat · 02/06/2024 16:08

I was called once when I was 18 to The Old Bailey I was a student so it was easy for me to take the time. That was 32 years ago never got called again, I thought it’d be a regular occurrence! I have a very large family only my mother in law has been called up. Only other person I know is a distant cousin

Carebearsonmybed · 02/06/2024 16:11

Twice but never actually sat on one.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 02/06/2024 16:12

I’ve been called once, DH never

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/06/2024 16:13

I’m 47 and have done it twice

on the last jury that I was on, one chap in his 60s was on his 5th time!

Lauren83 · 02/06/2024 16:23

Once when I was 19 (I think) not been called since and I'm 41

BringMeTea · 02/06/2024 16:37

Once.

Abitorangelooking · 02/06/2024 16:40

Never at 44. I’d quite like too tbh.

ManorMouse · 02/06/2024 16:40

Once, just after I turned 18 so 41 years ago. I was selected for an import duty fraud case, was objected to by the prosecutor, left the box, and was called back again as another juror was excused as they had some professional connection. We got about 5 minutes into the case when it was thrown out on a technicality. The Customs & Excise people used the wrong documentation apparently.

We were sent home and told to return the following Monday. The next day I got a phone call to say I didn't need to return.

My father did jury service twice about 10 years apart. My mother was never called. My brother was called about 10 years ago but got out of it as his business was struggling at the time and he couldn't afford to be away from it. My SiL has never been called.

A colleague's sister was called in a couple of years ago and spent nearly a month on a case about some complicated fraud. Myself and my colleague bumped into her one of the days as she was heading to the courthouse and she said she was heartily sick of the whole thing.

Twice, Once in my early 20's and I received a second citation on Friday for mid July.

JadeSeahorse · 02/06/2024 16:48

Twice. First time in 1977 and then again last summer. Both sexual assault cases.

Loved it back in the 70’s when jurors were really well treated but absolutely hated it last year. Things have changed so much and definitely not for the better.

Hope to God I am never called again but if I am I will have to ask to be excused due to the hours and hours of sitting around. I was left in absolute agony by it last time and have since discovered I have degenerative disc disease so really could not do it now.

DH has never been called but a relative of his is serving at present for the first time at the age of 74.

Isitautumnyet23 · 02/06/2024 16:50

Both myself and DH - never called. In our 40’s.

PoochiesPinkEars · 02/06/2024 16:56

DH and I are late 40's and neither ever called.

Bizarre some people are called multiple times... I wonder if they get a ✅ next to their name. 🤔

We need someone who is in the know to tell us how it works cos it doesn't seem so random.

Part of me would like to be involved but if I got a child cruelty/abuse case I would not feel that way, though I suppose if the child got justice that would count as a positive but needing to hear the details would be harrowing.

GrandTheftWalrus · 02/06/2024 16:58

I've just received yet another jury citation. This is about my 10th. Never been on an actual jury yet.

Sophiesaph24 · 02/06/2024 17:02

My DD24 has just been called in July. Fortunately she is having a gap year after some surgery but is well enough to go.

However, we are in the process of re-arranging a holiday just before her duty, for another reason, but JS does impact when we have to be back. Sod’s Law says she will be stood down now the holiday is shortened.

DS got called 2.5 yrs ago, also 24 at the time, as did a neighbour at same time (which makes me think that given postcodes come round every few years?). DS did a 2.5 day trial, neighbour was very disappointed to be stood down each day.

DH was called 8yrs ago and was stood down each day. I am 61 and never been called.

Thought it was meant to be kept secret

Only the jury room discussion is a secret.

Thought it was meant to be kept secret

It's not secret just don't discuss the ongoing ins and outs of a case especially on social media as you could be charged with contempt of court.

Choochoo21 · 02/06/2024 17:19

Once.

But it was during the barrister strikes and so we was only there for about 5mins.

I’m absolutely gutted as it’s something I’ve wanted to do my whole life.

Olderandwider66 · 02/06/2024 17:26

both of us in our 60s - me, never and my husband 3 times

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/06/2024 17:27

Twice and twice deferred so I'm off the register now.

HairyPotter · 02/06/2024 17:33

I’ve been called four times and served three. 2 guilty verdicts and one not proven (Scotland)

I was called weeks after my 18th birthday, as a v shy teenager it was really good for me. 2nd time in my 20's on a very dull case, no idea how it even made court. Found the whole process really interesting and would do it again.
