How would you feel about someone sniffing every 5 seconds?

If you were stuck on a flight or bus with them?

A few years back DD (she's 10) developed a sniffing tic. We ignored it (with a lot of difficulty, it massively puts me on edge) and it went away. But it's back. And it's bad. At the moment she's sniffing every 5 seconds or so.

In a month we're going to a holiday flight then bus to destination. If you were stuck on a flight/bus with a 10 year old sniffing every 5 seconds how would you feel? In the car today and I almost wanted to get out and walk miles home rather than stay in the car.

It's not that her nose is running? It's literally a tic?

Cheeesus · 01/06/2024 18:31

I get really annoyed by people sounds like that and my DH is tic-y and has allergies and I get really really upset by him sniffing.
But, on public transport, there is background noise and so long and it’s not a nose that obviously needs to be blown, I’ve never ever been bothered by sniffing.

That’s just me, but I think the vast majority of people won’t notice or mind.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 01/06/2024 18:33

I've got hay-fever so sound dreadful and have streaming eyes, I'm sniffing constantly as the tablets are doing naff all.

On a plane what with the engines and ac you probably won't notice it as much.

Sometimes you can't help your reaction. What annoys you annoys you.

It would wind me up and I would end up focusing on it and wind myself up more.

I'd be handing anyone who did it a hankie and telling them to blow their nose unless I knew it was a symptom of a bigger issue.

But it will still annoy me.

IncognitoUsername · 01/06/2024 18:34

Oh the poor thing. A friend of mine developed this when we were at school. It went away eventually- I think she had hypnotherapy or similar?
As for being on a plane etc, yes it might annoy me but that’s life. Others don’t have to put up with it all the time, just for a short time.

EdithStourton · 01/06/2024 18:36

Sorry, but it would drive me mad.
Noise cancelling headphones. And earplugs to hand to anyone near you who is starting to look desperate...

CloudDog · 01/06/2024 18:37

I knew someone who did this and it was also a tic. It wouldn’t bother me, if it did I’d put my AirPods in and listen/watch to something. In life we have to be tolerant of others.

If it was a dry sniff (just a tic) it actually wouldn't bother me. But if it was a wet sniff or I had any suspicion that she was holding mucus up there and needed to blow her nose I would be filled with nauseous rage.

TakeThePain · 01/06/2024 18:43

My daughter had coprolalia when she was younger and shouted 'FUCK FUCK SHIT' everywhere she went, and I bloody refused to worry about it or stop going places with her.

A little sniffing is fine; surely you'd hardly hear it over the white noise of the plane anyway.

HouseholdBores · 01/06/2024 18:43

Would probably irritate me a bit but less so with it being a kid than if it was an adult.

If she's doing something else does that distract her tick a bit? Like maybe sucking a lolly or sweet?

It's a kid with tics, c'mon man...

Yeah if you want to send her self-consciousness through the roof and make the rod even worse.

Sussurations · 01/06/2024 18:48

A child would irritate me less than an adult. I have a colleague whose sniffing I suspect is a tic. It makes me absolutely homicidal. Loop earplugs help.

DramaAlpaca · 01/06/2024 18:48

Honestly it would drive me nuts. Sorry, but it would. I'd say nothing of course.

Sue152 · 01/06/2024 18:49

When I read the title my first thought was, bet it's an anxiety tic.

I watch something I've downloaded from Netflix on the plane so I wouldn't be bothered at all.

She can't help it so if people are irritated they'll just have to suck it up.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 01/06/2024 18:51

It might irritate me I’m not sure on a flight/coach. I would think poor bugger though, sounds miserable. I would think hayfever not tic.

Pollou · 01/06/2024 18:51

Realistically most people won’t hear it on the plane, those that are sitting near will have headphones they can use and watch something if it’s long haul.

TruthorDie · 01/06/2024 18:52

Totally and utterly infuriating. I have been know to offer tissues but fantasise about punching them in the nose really hard

S72 · 01/06/2024 18:53

It is one of those noises that tip me over the edge into a red mist

I’m the same

AvalancheOfCheese · 01/06/2024 18:55

I have misophonia so this would absolutely drive me crazy

Danioyellow · 01/06/2024 18:56

Absolutely shocked at some of these replies. My 7yo ds has Tourette’s, it’s a neurological disorder and he can’t fucking help it. Believe me, it upsets him more than anyone. Would you all be on here being so hateful if it was an autistic child stimming, or a colicky baby screaming? Nice to now what people are actually thinking about my son when he’s sat there mortified, exhausted and sore from whatever tic is affecting him that day

ByCupidStunt · 01/06/2024 18:56

I've had this with adults before. Once on a plane when I asked them pointedly if they would like a handkerchief and once in a cafe where I told a man he really should have stayed at home.

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to say something to a 10 year old though.

SilverHairedCat · 01/06/2024 18:58

Tbh I'd be murderous.... However I have misophonia which means I struggle with things like this so I wear noise cancelling headphones at all times when travelling. I can't deal with repetitive noises, especially not bodily noises.
