How would you feel about someone sniffing every 5 seconds?

If you were stuck on a flight or bus with them?

A few years back DD (she's 10) developed a sniffing tic. We ignored it (with a lot of difficulty, it massively puts me on edge) and it went away. But it's back. And it's bad. At the moment she's sniffing every 5 seconds or so.

In a month we're going to a holiday flight then bus to destination. If you were stuck on a flight/bus with a 10 year old sniffing every 5 seconds how would you feel? In the car today and I almost wanted to get out and walk miles home rather than stay in the car.

There was someone who used to do this in the college library. At a rational level I knew it wasn’t a choice for him and that he should have my sympathy. My reptile brain fantasised about bookshelves falling on him.

Oh FGS! Does no one on MN have a fucking sense of humour! Of course I wouldn't murder her. In reality, I'd think 'Christ, how do her parents put up with that all that time?' and put my headphones in. Happy?

It’s not fucking funny taking the piss out of disabled children, especially when there’s parents like me with children struggling to cope with it on a daily basis. Would you be taking the piss out of a child with cerebral palsy? Or is it just the children with the ‘funny’ conditions like Tourette’s you feel like you can take the piss out of

haddockfortea · 01/06/2024 19:18

I have episodes of this, and it isn't a tic, it is an allergy. I absolutely can't help it, and the only alternative would be me constantly blowing my nose instead. Anyone with severe hay fever will tell you - it's like having a dripping tap in your head, and no matter how many times you blow your nose, it is running again 10 seconds later.

The people around you genuinely won't be able to hear it on the flight OP. The white noise of the engines etc is surprisingly loud once you take off. Everyone travelling is preoccupied with their own thoughts and families, don't give this a second thought. Your daughter is allowed to exist in the world exactly as she is.

TinaYouFatLard · 01/06/2024 19:22

In practical terms I would book her a window seat and you take the one next to her so she’s not directly next to a stranger. If it’s a dry sniff it can’t be all that loud especially with all the background noise of the plane.

Communionmom · 01/06/2024 19:22

Asking her to stop just makes it worse because she can't control it/doesn't even really realise she's doing it but drawing attention to it makes her anxious about it and makes it worse.

She saw an ENT consultant about something else and I mentioned the sniffing and he said she has a lazy Eustachian tube but nothing physically wrong.

Good call on the sweets, I'll bring some with me.

You are a disgusting human being. At times like this, I hope karma is is real.

LightDrizzle · 01/06/2024 19:26

Murderous I’m afraid but fortunately I wouldn’t say anything. I’d put my noise cancelling earbuds in and listen to something to mask it.

And you are utterly ridiculous! Not one thing I've said is taking the piss out of a disabled DC. The OP asked what people would do if someone was sniffing near them for several hours on public transport and she got a couple of jokey replies. The complete over-reaction of a few posters to those jokey replies is classic MN.

My ds has Tourette’s and my daughter has misophonia. You’re saying you couldn’t help slapping, stabbing or strangling a child making noise because you have misophonia and you’re nd? Id love to see the replies if this was a brain damaged child screeching rather than a child with uncontrollable ticcing.

I haven't says anything about hurting anyone! I'm just explaining that we can't help feeling angry at tics.

I'm on a flight tomorrow and I seriously hope I don't get anything like this.

Well you’ve had a post deleted so.....

JennyBeanR · 01/06/2024 19:28

I can't imagine it can possibly be loud enough for people to hear on a plane?

So what? Because the professionally offended of MN have spoken.

They'd do nothing! They just enjoy being dicks on the anonymous internet.

Seriously, don't give them a second thought.

This exactly. OP it must be worrying but honestly just try to enjoy your holiday!

I'd ask to be moved.

I am sorting out some headphones now but I have absolutely no storage on my phone for downloads, and I doubt I can use Internet in the air, does anyone know what can I do/use?

Your deleted post would suggest otherwise.

moostermum · 01/06/2024 19:38

DS now 11get tics. Normally cleaning his through. They grow out of it.

betterangels · 01/06/2024 19:43

I'd turn up my headphones until I couldn't hear anything because otherwise, it would really annoy me.

EdithStourton · 01/06/2024 19:45

TakeThePain · 01/06/2024 18:44

Yeah if you want to send her self-consciousness through the roof and make the rod even worse.

Clearly moderate humour doesn't translate over the internet...

JustWannaBeWorthIt · 01/06/2024 19:46

It wasn't funny or a joke @EdithStourton

Faz469 · 01/06/2024 19:47

My 11 yo ss forces a cough every now and again. That irritates the living daylights out of me. I end up with sensory overload n having to either go to be early or leave the house for an hour or so. I feel your pain....

Because you’ve made mothers of children with this disability feel like shit 👍 congratulations for your nasty, sanctimonious attitude

It was a joke. It may not have been funny. It wasn't taking the piss out of anyone.
